Helping Kids to Read

Helping Kids to Read Is your child having difficulty learning to read? We can help. A bit about me, the person behind this page:

My name is Heather Rawlins.

I am a Mum of 3 and Nanna to 5. I am a retired Special Education and remedial Teacher who loves working with Mums, Dads and Grandparents to help their children work through the difficulties some children face when learning to read. Many moons ago when my son was having difficulty learning to read, I went in search of answers for something to help, as Mums do. Not just as a Special Education Teache

r, but being a Mum working each day supporting my children with their learning to read and now with some of my Grand Children who need some extra help, Ive been able to gather up all sorts of tips and tricks which I would love to share with you. I have lots of practical tips, but also offer the Expressways to Reading Program. I have 2 Grandchildren who are having fantastic success with this program and have had some fantastic success with some of the local schools here in Queensland working with the children with this program. I also specialise in the diagnosis of Dyslexia. www.aaic.org.au

MUSIC NOTES AND LINES CAN MOVE! Many children who come to see us have music lessons and for some, they stop because it is "too hard". When playing, lines and notes move\fade but they don't tell anyone. Coloured paper will generally help. www.irlendyslexia.com

WHITE TRACKS THROUGHOUT THE TEXT? Did you know that not everybody "sees" white "tracks" in text? Did you know that they are formed from the gaps between the words? Most (not all) people with Irlen Syndrome are aware of these "tracks" when reading articles or any other small print text. They often think that everyone "sees" them but in reality not everyone does. For people who do "see" these, it is an indication that their brain focuses on the white on the page instead of the words. This is not anything that they can control.. it is a subconscious action (like blinking, coughing, sneezing etc.). It is also an indicator that the individual has Irlen Syndrome. When this happens, it also means that when reading, it is hard to stay focussed on the words and often makes comprehension of what is read, difficult. It also results in many people having to re-read lines of print, because they cannot remember what they have read without going over it again and again. Irlen lenses are actually Spectral Filters that remove, to varying degrees, some of the wavelengths of light that we know as "colours". This means that they modify the light entering our brain through our eyes. People with Irlen Syndrome are sensitive to some of those wavelengths because they interfere with how the brain "processes" the visual information. Even the brains of people who are blind or vision impaired still receive wavelengths of light through their eyes and amazingly, some of them are still sensitive to some of the wavelengths. We have seen clients like this as a result of a Traumatic Brain Injury who benefit from wearing Irlen tinted lenses that are specific to their needs. www.irlendyslexia.com

IRLEN SYNDROME IS HIGHLY HEREDITARY. Early research showed that if a parent has Irlen, there is a 70% chance that a child will have it, and if one child in a family has it, there is a 50 -70% that other children will have it. This is borne out by actual events at our clinic. We have many instances where most members of a household have Irlen, and many members of their extended family also experience the symptoms of Irlen. The interesting thing about Irlen is, that many of the people who experience the symptoms in their everyday life just accept them, without questioning. It is often the case that a parent comes along with their child/children who are struggling at school and during the assessment process and discussions, they discover that they too have Irlen and that the symptoms that they just "accept" can be removed with appropriate coloured overlays and/ or Irlen Spectral Filters worn as glasses. Irlen Syndrome is not just about reading. Many sufferers experience daily headaches and frequent migraines. These are sometimes coupled with poor reading and writing skills and but not always.

Irlen Syndrome is a visual processing disorder which effects children and adults within the population equally.

It is made worse by extremely bright or fluorescent lights, working on computer screens for short periods of time or working from white paper especially with black text.

This real world experience is common to many clients who visit an Irlen Clinic.

IRLEN SYNDROME IS A VISUAL PROCESSING DISORDER INVOLVING THE BRAIN.. NOT THE EYES! Our eyes send visual signals to the visual cortex in our brain. For most people, the signal arrives "intact" meaning that what the brain "sees" is exactly what was sent from the eyes. For people with Irlen Syndrome, there are parts of the light entering the eye that cause a distortion of the signal before it reaches the visual cortex, so what the brain "sees" IS NOT the same as what the signal from the eyes is. These distortions can include blurring, movement and fading of words on a page, a difficulty in being able to focus on a visual task. or remembering what has been read. It can also affect writing. This is sometimes messy, and difficult to understand. Irlen lenses, when worn as glasses actually "filter out" specific parts of the light that enters the eyes, so that there is no distortion when the signal reaches the visual cortex. So, for those people, the signal from the eyes remains intact when it reaches the visual cortex. Coloured surfaces e.g., paper, also remove some of the wavelengths of light entering the eyes, similar to the lenses. So in a different way, the colour is preventing distortion of the signals. That is why many students with Irlen Syndrome prefer to use coloured paper instead of white. Their distortions are removed and they can study more effectively.
