This is Jason, one of our Leading Hands in the Maintenance Team at Mid West Ports.

Jason helps keep the Port operating safely and efficiently by coordinating maintenance works across equipment, infrastructure and facilities throughout the Port.

From repairs and shutdowns to troubleshooting and day-to-day maintenance, Jason and the team play a huge role in keeping things running behind the scenes.

When the Port keeps moving, there’s a good chance people like Jason have had something to do with it!

🚢⚓ Most people only ever see the Port from the outside.

This is your chance to go beyond the gates and experience the real heartbeat of the Port...the people. 🙋🏽‍♂️

Meet the crews coordinating giant ship movements, the pilots guiding vessels safely into harbour, the operators keeping trade flowing and the teams working around the clock behind the scenes to connect the Mid West to the world.

It’s loud, fast-moving, surprisingly massive… and unlike anything most locals ever get to experience up close.

If you’ve ever been curious about what actually happens inside the Port, this is the tour to do.

Did you know dredging has been part of life at the Port of Geraldton for almost 100 years?

This week's photo takes us back to 1925, when dredging works were underway ahead of the construction of Berth 1.

Dredging has long played an important role in keeping ports safe and operational by maintaining the depth of shipping channels and harbour areas so vessels can move safely between the harbour and open ocean.

There are two types of dredging:
⚓Maintenance dredging – regularly clearing sediment to keep channels safe
⚓Capital dredging – deepening or widening channels for new development

What’s likely pictured here is capital dredging, undertaken to create or expand harbour infrastructure and accommodate growing trade and larger vessels.

The Minister for Ports Hon Stephen Dawson MLC today announced a major milestone for the Geraldton Port Maximisation Project (PMaxP), with Mid West Ports awarding the contract for construction of the new Surge Protection Breakwater at the Port of Geraldton to MGN Civil Pty Ltd.

This critical infrastructure will transform Port operations by reducing operational downtime caused by surge wave conditions, which currently impact the Port for around 30 days every year.

Once complete, the breakwater is expected to:
✅significantly reduce weather-related disruptions (by up to 80 per cent)
✅strengthen port resilience
✅lower shipping costs for customers
✅provide a safer sheltered mooring area for harbour tugs
✅ support the reliable export of the Mid West grain harvest.

Importantly, the project will also unlock future trade growth opportunities, creating capacity for the future development of Berths 8 and 9 and supporting emerging industries, including renewable energy supply chains.

As momentum builds on the State Government's $350 million Geraldton PMaxP, we're excited to share a new video showcasing the vision, benefits and future opportunities this transformational project will deliver for the Mid West.

What does a pilot boat do? 🛥️
You’ve probably seen them darting out to sea or waiting alongside a vessel but the pilot boat plays a critical role at the Port of Geraldton.

Its main job? Safely transferring Marine Pilots to and from ships.

When a vessel approaches the Port, a Marine Pilot is transported out by pilot boat and climbs aboard, often via a rope ladder, to guide the ship through local waters, into berth. Once the vessel departs, the process happens in reverse, with the pilot boat returning to collect the Pilot offshore.

It might look routine, but it’s anything but.

These transfers require precision boat handling, timing and teamwork, especially in changing weather, swell and low-light conditions. Pilot boat crews work closely with Marine Pilots to ensure every transfer is carried out safely and efficiently.

It’s a small vessel with a big job, helping keep ships moving and the Port operating smoothly, 24/7. 🌊

We’re proud to introduce the JK Foundation as this year’s Mid West Ports Staff Consultative Committee Charity Partner, with $15,000 being donated to the organisation.

Each year, Port staff nominate and support a local charity through fundraising initiatives including our Port Bus Tours, On Water Port Tours and other community activities.

The JK Foundation is dedicated to enriching regional communities by helping young people reach their potential through improved access to sport, education, health and wellbeing opportunities.

The official cheque presentation was made by Mid West Ports Board Chair Noel Hart and CEO Damian Tully to JK Foundation Chair and Founder Josh Kennedy and Operations Manager Kent Morgan at last week's Mid West Chamber of Commerce and Industry- MWCCI Business After Hours event.

We’re excited to support the incredible work the Foundation does across the Mid West. 🥳
