Monday Memory ๐Ÿ’ญ

What is one family story you remember being told as a child?

Was it about a grandparent, great-grandparent, an old family home, a journey, a job, war service, a wedding, or a family tradition?

These stories are often where our family history journey begins. Some are funny, some are mysterious, and some become precious clues for future research.

Weโ€™d love you to share a family memory in the comments below.

๐ŸŒฟ Anna Axford: A Life of Love, Loss and Resilience ๐ŸŒฟ

She must have been more than disappointed.

When Anna Axford, my great-grandmother, was born in 1882 in Warminster, Wiltshire, it was a small, bustling market town. The population was around 6000, and as the years passed, the railway and nearby military on the Salisbury Plains kept it busy.

At 21 years old, she married Robert Everett on a cold winter day at St Denyโ€™s church in Warminster.

Most roads were unpaved or cobbled, and horses and carts filled the streets along with people walking.

Life was simple and comfortable. Robert was a Harness Maker, a much-needed service at that time. In 1851, Robert ran a Saddlery, relocating it from East St to Market Place, 10 years later. Robert passed this business on to his son, Rice James Everett. He had 2 apprentices.

Anna and Robertโ€™s family grew over 17 years. They had seven children, four boys and three girls. The family moved several times. While living in East Street, their first family home, they had Annaโ€™s mother, Mary, a widow, along with 5 children. Around 1871, there were four children at home, and they had a servant to make them comfortable.

By 1881, they were living above the Saddlery next door to the Bath Arms.

Annaโ€™s children all died, bar Rice James Everett (her youngest), before her. It must have been shattering. Today, to lose a child before you die is something you never recover from. How would she have felt? I cannot imagine the sadness. Times then were very different, and she didnโ€™t lose any in childbirth, nor as young children. Medicine, as we know it these days, along with equipment and Doctors, really didnโ€™t exist by comparison in the late 1880s. After her husband Robert died, she moved in with Riceโ€™s family. He left her 1500 pounds.

Anna died at 82 years, which is a wonderful age, quite uncommon for that era. Hence, she outlived her children. Anna would have been well respected for her age and walked slowly down Silver Street to St Denyโ€™s church every Sunday with her family.

So disappointed, yes, emotionally drained maybe, but no doubt her granddaughters, Eleanor and Sylvia, would have given her lots of joy during her last years.
