Seasonal outlook for Spring 2026.

AFAC has released the Seasonal Bushfire Outlook for spring 2026 with fire authorities predicting a heightened risk of fire across northern and southeastern NSW, south-east Queensland, northeastern Tasmania, parts of WA, SA and Victoria, and large parts of the NT.

AFAC CEO Rob Webb said: “This outlook highlights a heightened risk of fire across several parts of the country, driven by a combination of dry conditions in the east and increased fuel loads through parts of central and northern Australia."

"The variety of risk factors across different regions reinforces the need for communities to understand their local conditions and prepare early."

The Seasonal Bushfire Outlook is an expert analysis of bushfire fuels, past rainfall, temperature, and climate outlooks undertaken by the Bureau of Meteorology and fire agencies across Australia.

🎉 Happy Birthday, Half Cat! 🐱🎈

Our brigade had a fantastic time joining in the celebrations for Half Cat’s birthday at the Geelong vs Brisbane game at GMHBA Stadium.

Captain Koala was out and about handing out stickers, meeting plenty of smiling fans, and even taking part in the mascot race alongside Half Cat and friends!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello and helped make it such a fun day. We love being part of these great community events! 🚒💙

🚒 Young Minds Kindergarten Visit 🚒

We had a fantastic time visiting Young Minds Kindergarten, where we spoke with the children about fire safety, what to do in the event of a fire, and gave them the opportunity to explore the fire truck, see our equipment up close, and even have a turn using the fire hose.

A big thank you to the wonderful children, teachers and families at Young Minds Kindergarten for making us feel so welcome. We’d also like to sincerely thank you for your very generous donation to our brigade. Your support is greatly appreciated and helps us continue serving our community.

We loved spending time with everyone and look forward to seeing you again soon! 🚒😊

Geelong City Fire Brigade Announcement

Recognition of Sub‑Station Officer Francis Michael “Frank” Markham

The Geelong City Fire Brigade is deeply proud to share that the Country Fire Authority has formally recognised the death of Sub‑Station Officer Francis Michael “Frank” Markham as a CFA Line of Duty Death.

Frank sustained fatal injuries during an authorised training exercise at the Geelong City Fire Station in September 1968, and his passing has always been remembered within our brigade as a profound sacrifice made in service to his community.

This formal recognition ensures Frank’s name will now be honoured on Memorial Banners, CFA’s Honour Roll, Honour Boards at CFA Headquarters, and the Victorian Emergency Services Memorial in Treasury Gardens. An application to the AFAC National Emergency Services Memorial will also be submitted.

This acknowledgement reflects the significance of his service and the circumstances of his death, and it provides enduring recognition for his family, his colleagues, and the generations of firefighters who have followed.

We extend our sincere thanks to CFA for their careful consideration and acknowledgement.
Today, we honour Frank’s memory, his service, and the legacy he leaves within the Geelong City Fire Brigade.

This is extremely disturbing and horrifying at the same time. Please if the road is closed, look for and take an alternative route.

Last night, our members, alongside Loch CFA Fire and Rescue, Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria, responded to a motor vehicle accident on the South Gippsland Highway at Bena.

The highway was completely blocked due to the accident, and all emergency services worked as quickly as possible to establish traffic management and roadblocks while prioritising patient care.

While the vast majority of motorists were understanding and followed directions, unfortunately one of our volunteers were verbally abused after asking a driver to turn around. Our members are volunteers who give up their own time to help the community. No one deserves to be abused while carrying out their role and working to keep everyone safe.

Also during the incident, an Ambulance Victoria helicopter was circling to locate a suitable landing area on the road. Although there was not yet a roadblock at the intended landing site, it was clearly an active emergency scene with multiple emergency service vehicles present. Alarmingly, while the helicopter was only metres from landing and clearly visible to all road users a vehicle drove directly beneath it, placing everyone involved at unnecessary risk. The helicopter then diverted to the Korumburra Showgrounds.

We ask all road users to please be patient and respect the directions of emergency service personnel. Road closures and traffic diversions are put in place to protect patients, emergency responders and the public.

Thank you to everyone who showed patience and understanding while crews worked at the scene. Your cooperation helps us do our job safely and ensures we make it home to our own families.

This is a rack that will store our spare breathing apparatus (BA) cylinders for our specialised BA support appliance. A couple of our brigade members designed and built this, and it wasn't possible without the great generosity of a couple of businesses that donated materials. Our brigade greatly appreciates their generosity. Tradelink South Geelong donated the white storm water pipe, and Barwon Timber in Breakwater donated the timber. Thank you.

If you see an item for sale saying it can extinguish lithium ion battery fires, don’t buy it.

There is currently no Australian Standard for testing a Fire Extinguisher's success in combating a fire involving Lithium-ion Batteries.

CFA does not promote, endorse or engage in the sale, use or servicing of fire extinguishers which purport to be effective on lithium-ion battery fires.
