Water supply is now a top order issue in the Geelong-G21 region, especially as drought conditions linger on.

Thanks to Barwon Water, we already have a clever & very sensible plan which would create millions of extra litres for our growing population. The Alternative Water Grid would provide supply for decades, not to mention cleaner ocean water & drought relief.

Great to see Geelong Advertiser highlighting our pitch for:

~ $12m for the implementation of a storage basin and distribution pipeline in the Surf Coast hinterland
~ $7.5m for design of the North West recycling facility;
~$500,000 to develop a business case for recycled water in northern Geelong.

With a little help from our MPs, we can make this happen.

What a magnificent day!

My sincere thanks to everyone who made this year’s G21 Regional Forum at the RACV Torquay such a huge success. The resounding takeaway: community connection is the bedrock of good health & wellbeing.

A day of thought-provoking presentations on “growing well together” began with Dr Norman Swan’s keynote which revealed the profound impact of mental health on physical health, and the importance of having a sense of meaning & control as we navigate life’s pressures. In a cost-of-living crisis, not so easy.

We talked about the cost of food & our growing food relief network, local restaurants making a social impact & creative leaders bringing joy to our communities. Just as important were the conversations off stage – connections were made, ideas were hatched, and our community network was strengthened.

A big thank you again to Major Sponsor Built., along with TAC, WorkSafe, The Gordon, Making Change Arts Program, Times News Group, Deakin University, Urbis and Tract for making the day possible. We are grateful for the positive impact you have on our region’s health & wellbeing.

We were so proud to present just a few of the many circular & clean economy projects in the G21 Geelong region on a whirlwind tour this week with the Board & Exec team of Sustainability Victoria.

A stunning welcome to Wadawurrung Country with Corrina Eccles at the Barwon River was followed by visits to the massive towers & turbines at GeelongPort's proposed offshore wind terminal site, world class circular economy engineers at Austeng (geo-polymer bridges & hybrid hydrogen systems), Barwon Water ground-breaking Renewable Organics Network (waste to energy & commercialised biochar production), carpet makers Godfrey Hirst (synthetic carpet waste recycling concept), "climate safe rooms" for low-income households pioneered by Geelong Sustainability and an overview by Geelong Manufacturing Council of the growing number of advanced manufacturers now embedding net zero & circular economy principles. G21's exceptional natural beauty and potential was also showcased by Corrina Eccles of Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation & Dr Amber Clarke, CEO of Corangamite Catchment Management Authority

In Wadawurrung language, Kitjarra-dja-bul Bullarto langi-ut means “places of many stories” - a perfect description for the 60 kilometres of riverine parklands that flank the lower Moorabool and Barwon Rivers, from farming country near the Brisbane Ranges to the ocean at Barwon Heads.

We have a magnificent masterplan to link up & rejuvenate this vast natural corridor - $43 million needed for Stage 1. The Victorian Government has pledged $1.65 million to get the ball rolling.

Imagine the day we can walk or ride the whole 60 kilometres, mountains to coast!

Congratulations to Corangamite Catchment Management Authority , Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation , Barwon Water and partners on the completion of the plan and thanks to Geelong Advertiser for sharing the vision in yesterday’s paper.
