Happy World Bee Day! ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’›

๐Ÿง Did you know?
That sunflowers have a backup plan if bees or other pollinators aren't around? ๐ŸŒปWhile it's not the best for genetic diversity, sunflowers can self-pollinate using the seeds at the center of the flower. This unique ability to act as both male and female helps ensure the sunflower's survival , even in challenging conditions.

On 25 April, we pause to remember and reflect.

From Gallipoli in 1915 through to today, Anzac Day is a time to honour all Australians who have served in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

At The University of Queensland and the Queensland Agricultural College (now UQ Gatton), students and staff were among those who answered the call, with nearly 300 people enlisting for active overseas and home duty.

Their service is remembered across our campuses. At St Lucia, a memorial plaque sits in the foyer of the Forgan Smith Building, and at Gatton, another is located at the War Memorial Swimming Pool. These plaques stand as lasting reminders of those who served and those who did not return.

They were made possible through the efforts of the University War Memorial Committee and the Gatton Old Boys and Past Students Association, ensuring their legacy continues to be honoured.

Lest we forget.

We are excited to be welcoming Ridewest to UQ Gatton tomorrow, Friday 24 April, as their first stop on their Brisbane to Longreach challenge! ๐Ÿšด๐Ÿ’ช

RideWest is a 1,311km biennial bike ride, raising money for mental health support programs for regional Queenslanders. They raise vital funds and awareness of the need for more mental health support programs for people living in regional areas.
Over the last 16 years, the ride has raised over $2,600,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia) so that they can deliver their Wellbeing Out West program.

Accessible support is so important to us at UQ Gatton and we are committed to fostering strong connections with our community ๐Ÿ™Œ. We are deeply embedded in the agricultural and veterinary industries across Queensland, Australia, and internationally. Our graduates, researchers and industry partners drive innovation and shape best practices worldwide ๐ŸŒ, creating a lasting impact on the future of food sustainability, animal health and environmental management.

We wholeheartedly congratulate those involved with RideWest for their work raising vital funds, awareness, educating, and destigmatising mental health for regional Queenslanders and we look forward to cheering them on! ๐Ÿ‘

The RideWest team are expected to arrive on campus at 8:30am โฐ, so feel free to join us on Main Drive (near the flags outside NW Briton Building) if you'd like to show your support.

If you'd like to contribute a donation to RideWest you can do so via their website: https://ridewest-2026.raiselysite.com/

๐Ÿ‘ Here's to all the incredible women in our lives and communities, as we reflect upon another fantastic International Women's week. ๐Ÿชป๐Ÿ’œ

UQ Gatton was well represented at the Lockyer Valley Regional Council's IWD Breakfast event โ˜•, filling the seats at 3 tables! Whilst it was a great opportunity for us to connect with the local community and each other, it was even more special that so many of our colleagues could come together to support fellow UQ staff, Kerri MacMahon, as the event's guest speaker. Kerri captivated the audience by sharing her adventures on the high seas โš“when she spent more than four years circumnavigating Australia. She reminded us that we are more capable than we think ๐Ÿ’ชand the importance of being open to new challenges and opportunities.

Staff also came together on campus for our IWD Morning Tea, where we shared delicious home-baked goods and the most incredible cake by local patisserie Sweet Treats and Takeaway Gatton ๐Ÿ˜๐ŸŽ‚ A special thank you to our St Lucia colleagues who also joined us and to Shannon Willoughby (Executive Director Strategic Partnerships - Government and Industry), for sharing your poignant reflections on IWD with the group.

To wrap up the week, our community continues to cheer on Georgia Gunew, who secured a top-10 finish in her Paralympic debut in the giant slalom โ›ท at Milano Cortina on Thursday. Georgia will return to the slopes on Saturday, 14 March for the slalom V1 (AS2) from 6pm. ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ (Photo credit: Paralympics Australia.)
