A little “farm fail” otherwise known as learning opportunity.
Three weeks ago we sold all our commercial chickens leaving us just these two large older heritage birds.
The reason we sold them is that they had discovered the veggie patch and were jumping up onto the wicking beds and digging out all of our veggies. So we had to lock them up. But then we thought about it and decided we didn’t actually need them because we have lots of ducks to give us eggs and we didn’t actually need the extra chicken eggs.
Also, we were feeding birds we didn’t need and so we thought we would save on feed. We kept these two larger older birds because they are too heavy to jump up onto the beds, and we have a soft spot for them.
However, since then, our dog who has not got a tick in the five years that we have been here, has had four ticks in the last three weeks!
Guess who’s picking up more chickens tomorrow?
