The extinction of the crest-tailed mulgara, in addition to four other Australian marsupials, earlier this year are a warning that WA cannot continue to rely on a reactive approach to conservation. It's critical that our government start to address the underlying pressures that leave native plants and wildlife vulnerable to extinction in the first place.

This threatened species day, we need to insist on no more extinctions. It's not too late to bring nature back from the brink.

My last hike here in Mongolia for 2026 and it was to get views of Khuvsgul Lake from the top of Chochu Peak.
There’s been rain and the path was a bit slippery, full of puddles and it was cloudy.
I was prepared to turn back if it looked like there’d be no visibility, but an icy breeze blew some of the cloud away and I persisted to the summit.
There a series of 13 stupas welcomed me with the sound of prayer flags flapping in the wind.

High above the tree line and in the distance the mountains to the west were covered in snow.

My footage and pics don’t do justice to the scenery, I’m tired from the last 8 days and so pushed myself out of sheer will power.
My hands were frozen and so used my phone as little as possible, it was worth it though and the stupas at the top with the lake in the background dramatic and breathtaking.

A little glimpse of some of the terrain we covered yesterday on our way to the reindeer herders camp on the edges of the boreal forest in the Khuvsgul Lake area.
Full of awe for this remote, pristine wilderness… and the skill and mastery of the horseman who make it possible for us to get there.

It was more than magic!

Some snaps from the last three days hiking through the Horidol Saridag Protected Mountain Area in Khuvsgul Lake Province - amazing!
Scoping it for a new offering in 2027 - it’s extraordinary - so remote and pristine.
Today I head for the Reindeer herder camp overnight and then to Tumbe from where I’ll walk for another 3 days towards the Lake.

Cannot wait to walk among these beauties unless than two weeks!
The Fitzgerald Biosphere (and most of Western Australia) is alive with the colour and vibrancy of wildlfowers.
Here are some of the beauties we’ll be seeing on the Mamang Trail on the west side of the Fitzgerald River National Park.

Our nine day walk through the Altai Mountains in the Tavan Bogd National Park in Mongolia is one epic view after another, one magic moment after another - on day 6 we arrive at White River only one day away from Basecamp, we see 14,000 year-old petroglyphs showing our innate need to express ourselves, and we get our first big view of the five sacred peaks.
It’s awesome.
