🏉Got the ‘footy bye’ blues?

Simply head to the Moored exhibition at the Moores Building! You can stare longingly at Carolyn White’s ‘Go Freo’, AND Robyn Varpins’ ‘My Anchor is Here’ AND Kirsten Shenton-Smith’s collection of local landmarks AND inspired works by many, many Freo artists.

It won’t fill the game void BUT you will certainly still feel immense joy, awe and pride.

đŸ€ŒđŸ»When the Italian Clubs gather for lunch in Freo, and you’re invited, throw on your fave pair of elasticised pants and enjoy the gastronomical rides!

Our Italian community has contributed significantly to the Fremantle you see today with restaurants, all sorts of businesses, architecture and cafes. And I love seeing the ‘vintage’ Freo Dockers gear that’s hugely popular and so familiar 🇼đŸ‡č 😉

An open, honest and robust discussion will always get me attention. Tonight Rikki Lea Bestall, CEO of Screenwest; Kate Separavich, WA Screen Producer and Megan Palinkas, Writer-Producer spoke of the opportunities - and of course challenges - now our shiny new film studio has not only opened but is delivering its first productions.

In Freo we have the perfect backdrops and ready made ‘set’ so often have film crews in the streets and buildings, particularly on the West End. These productions bring great business to town through employment (we have A LOT of crew living in greater Freo), accommodation, feeding crews and supplying props/costumes/anything.

So hold tight and keep watch for what’s to come!

đŸŸ Who says you can’t teach hoomans new tricks?!

Loki and I have been sniffing around the Dog Exercise and Prohibited Areas Policy & Local Law Review - and we’d love to hear your thoughts too!

The City Engagement team is currently in PUBLIC COMMENT mode and seeking community feedback via My Say. The link is open until 5pm FRIDAY, 22 May, https://mysay.fremantle.wa.gov.au/dog-policy-local-law-review.

So, what happens next?
The Engagement team will work through the many responses and additional information received before presenting a report to Council. From there, a determination will be made on whether the Local Laws relating to dogs, and the Dog Exercise and Prohibited Areas Council Policy, should be amended. IF amendments are recommended, further consultation may also be required. At this stage, the report is anticipated to go to Council in late June 2026.

If you’ve got thoughts, experiences, or ideas to share - now’s the time to have your say! đŸ¶

đŸŽ»Minds and hearts flew as the Fremantle Chamber Orchestra and 16-year-old (not a typo!) Ellie Malonzo played the premiere of her composed piece (no, also not a typo!). Inspired by the tale of Icarus and Dadelus, and the ancient Seikilos Epitaph the score was rich and extraordinary. If you too would like to feel both inspired and an underachiever all at once, see Ellie’s incredible work on Insta

🎉 A golden 50th birthday for The Meeting Place (TMP) was celebrated on Tuesday.

It started in 1976 by Helen Cattalini as a small information centre supporting the Italian migrant women working at Mills and Wares Biscuits Factory and often far from the support of their families

Over the decades it has evolved to offer classes, programs and events. Though the centre successfully offers all of those things, TMP Manager Jade said it’s the small acts of kindness quietly happening there that mean the most.

Congratulations to today’s TMP team and the generations of volunteers - some who started as young Mums there in the 1970s and still volunteer there today - on making TMP the treasure it is.

Sitting in the garden at Samson House, birds chirping, dappled evening light and cuppa in hand for Backyard Truth Telling was nothing short of soul nourishment. Extraordinary stories from everyday people - I can’t recommend it enough.

The next talk is Saturday afternoon at the Walyalup Aboriginal Cultural Centre, it’s FREE and refreshments are provided. No surprises the limited seats fill fast. Book through the City’s website.

* I didn't quite nail the words of the amazing John Mogridge the first time, forgive the overtype.

Kids these days - they get to engage with art the minute you open a book and read with them, and what inspired art it is!

Our beloved is hosting the Thames & Hudson Illustration Exhibition at the until 23rd May for all ages to enjoy. There are hundreds of storied artworks from over 50 local, national and international artists.

Congratulations to Jen and her amazing team for not only bringing this event to Fremantle but also on a hugely successful Award night on Friday.
