- Blessing of the Fleet, Fremantle.
The Blessing of the Fleet is an annual religious tradition adopted by many fishing villages and ports around the world to bless the fishing fleet before the fishing season opens. The celebration brings people of diverse cultural backgrounds together in celebration of faith and long held fishing traditions.
This time honoured and much-loved event will be celebrated in Fremantle this Sunday 25 October 2026. In its 78th year, the procession will depart from St Patricks Basilica, Adelaide Street Fremantle at 2pm and wind its way through the streets of Fremantle to the Fishing Boat Harbour.
As a tribute to this well-established religious and civic tradition, the photographic timeline takes us from the very early years when fishing boats were moored in South Bay and in the safe shelter of South Mole, through times of much change, to the modern bustling fishing boat harbour and port which exists today.
