🔧 Board Rack Refurbishment Update! 🔧

A massive thank you to everyone who got stuck in at our pre-Busy Bee on Sunday and helped with the modifications and repairs to our board racks. We really appreciate everyone who gave up their time, got on the tools and helped get the job done!

The racks have now been repaired and modified and are officially on their way to be galvanised. This will give them a fresh lease on life and help keep them protected for many years to come.

It was fantastic to see so many members of our community pitching in and helping improve our facilities, especially on Father’s Day.

📢 IMPORTANT REMINDER: If you still have a private ski or board stored at the club, they MUST be removed by this Friday, 11 September. Please make sure you have collected your gear before then, as we continue with the gear shed upgrades and reorganisation at our busy bee this Sunday the 13th at 8am

Fremantle has had the incredible opportunity to host the Women in Powercraft program at Leighton Beach over the past couple of weeks.

It has been fantastic to be part of an initiative that has brought together women from across the state with a shared purpose to encourage, support and empower women to develop their skills, confidence and experience in powercraft, training and assessment.

The Women in Powercraft program provides female members with a supportive and collaborative environment to gain hands on experience, strengthen their technical skills and work towards valuable qualifications, creating pathways to further opportunities within surf lifesaving.

Powercraft plays an integral role within our organisation, supporting patrol operations, emergency response, competition, training and leadership. Increasing female participation and representation in powercraft not only strengthens our teams but also creates meaningful opportunities for women to progress into operational, coaching, training and leadership roles.

Initiatives like this are about so much more than learning to operate a craft. They are about building confidence, sharing knowledge, challenging perceptions and creating an environment where women feel empowered to step forward, develop their capabilities and embrace new opportunities.

The program has also provided a valuable platform for women from different clubs to connect, learn from one another and build positive, professional and supportive interclub relationships. These connections strengthen our powercraft community and create opportunities for continued collaboration and development well beyond the program.

By investing in the development of our female members and creating pathways for them to grow, we are helping to build a stronger, more inclusive and capable surf lifesaving community for the future.

A huge thank you to Surf Life Saving WA, the trainers and all participating clubs for their commitment to this important initiative and for creating an environment where women can learn, develop, support one another and continue to grow within powercraft.

𝐕𝐀𝐋𝐄 𝐒𝐘𝐋𝐕𝐈𝐀 𝐁𝐋𝐀𝐂𝐊𝐋𝐄𝐘

The Club bids a fond farewell to Sylvia Blackley, who passed away peacefully on the 16th August 2026 at the age of 93.

Sylvia was a Life Member of the Ladies Auxiliary and widow of National, State and Club Life Member David Blackley. We were pleased to be able to help celebrate their 90th birthdays in 2023 on the occasion of David's 60 years as a Life Member of this Club.

In addition to her surf club membership, Sylvia was an inaugural member of the Fremantle Swan Dragon Boat Club. She became a Life Member of that Club in 1995. The surf club has been closely associated with the dragon boat club over the years and many lifesaving club members have also been dragon boat club members.

Sylvia was a wonderful lady. Amongst other things, she was a talented designer who designed one of the Leighton Club badges. But she will most be remembered for her smile, warmth and friendly nature.

We send our condolences to Sylvia and David’s children Graeme and Charmaine and their families. Graeme and Charmaine are both former members of our Club.
Sylvia's funeral will be held in the East Chapel at Fremantle Cemetery next Wednesday 26 August 2026 from 12 noon for an hour, to be followed by tea/coffee.

Sunday 13th of September is our Club’s Annual Busy Bee!

Join us from 8:30am to help get the club ready for another fantastic season.

We’ll be tidying and organising the gear shed and storage areas, cleaning up member spaces, and preparing our patrol, nipper and surf sports equipment for the season ahead.

Whether you can spare an hour or stay for the whole morning, every helping hand makes a big difference.

The medallion, dated February 20th 1937, belonged to H. Argyle and was found on a beach by Fremantle Surf Life Saving Club Historian Brian Troy.

Mr Troy discovered the medallion belonged to a man named Hurburt Argyle who was a Scarboro Surf Life Saving Club member and lived at 8 Knutsford Street, Fremantle.

“We’re hoping to find out if there are any descendants or relatives of H. Argyle. He was born in 1916 and died in 1988, he was surf boat vice-captain in 1937 and 1938,” he told 102.5 ABC Perth.

“He certainly has lots of brothers and sisters and we’re hoping that somebody will come forward and fill in some more details.”

Mr Troy recently presented the medal to Scarboro Surf Life Saving Club for safekeeping, and now the club wants to reunite the medallion with a descendant or relative for its upcoming centenary celebrations.

A list of Bronze holders revealed that H. Argyle was the 100th Scarboro club member to receive the bronze medallion.

Scarboro life member Doug McGhie said the bronze medallion would easily be the oldest in the club’s possession.

The image on the medal also provides a glimpse into Western Australia’s surf lifesaving history, the pair depicted are fitting a reel line and cork belt which were used for sea rescues before boats and jet skis.

Historic Presentation to

An almost 90 year old Bronze Medallion has been “returned” to the safe-keeping of Scarboro Surf Life Saving Club.

The Bronze was found at a beach some time ago by Fremantle Life Member and Club Historian Brian Troy.

The obverse showed a reel with an old cork surf belt worn around the chest while the reverse was engraved with the name H Argyle and the number 12809.

Brian can’t recall where or when it was found – could have been 40 years ago when he was competing or within the last 10 years when he was an Age Manager and coach – but with no immediate way of identifying the Club or date issued, Brian took it home for safe keeping.

The Bronze recently resurfaced while cleaning out a cupboard – Brian had forgotten he had it!

Fortuitously, Brian was now in possession of various spreadsheets that had been compiled by Cottesloe’s Geoff Brown as part of the 100th Anniversary of Surf Lifesaving Australia in 2007. One of the spreadsheets showed every Bronze issued in WA from 1926 up to 1954.

The search for the name “Argyle” revealed 2 entries. The first one didn’t match the number, but the second one did. Amazingly, they were for the same person, a member of the Scarboro SLSC. It appears the squad that H Argyle had qualified with all had duplicate Bronze Medallions issued. And incredibly, the entries were all for 20 February 1937 – 90 years ago next February!

The handover of the Bronze Medallion was held at the Fremantle SLSC Clubrooms on Friday 31 July 2026.

The Bronze was accepted on behalf of the Scarboro SLSC by Scarboro Life Member Doug McGhie.

Doug said the Bronze Medallion would easily be the oldest one now in possession of the Scarboro Club and comes at an auspicious time as Scarboro prepares to celebrate its centenary of foundation in January 1928.

Coincidentally, the list of Bronze holders revealed that H Argyle was the 100th Scarboro member to gain the Bronze Medallion!

Nothing more is currently known about H Argyle – any leads or information appreciated.
