Preparation is key to giving yourself the best chance against bushfires. Don't leave it too late

All the celebrations done and not sure what to do this weekend?

Why not use the time to prepare your home for a bushfire.

With the possibility of hot weather on the way next week, we’re likely to see an increased fire risk. Clearing gutters, trimming vegetation, and making a bushfire plan now can make a big difference later.

A little preparation today could help protect your home and family tomorrow.

Get Ready Weekend is fast approaching, how prepared are you?

In the event of an emergency, here are some great apps that could help you.

HAZARDS NEAR ME: This app is great for checking any bush fire hazards near you and around the state.

EMERGENCY PLUS: If you ever find yourself in an emergency, this app can give you GPS coordinates of your location to be relayed to 000. For those who have trouble with numbers, it also has what3words built in so that operators can gather your location.

BOM WEATHER: This can help you prepare for any kind of weather, with wind, heat and humidity tabs available for summer days.

LIVE TRAFFIC: Not just for days when you’re running late to work, Live Traffic can also be helpful in emergency situations to plan escape routes and check road conditions with traffic cams.

This is how you prepare your home for the bush fire season.

1. Trim overhanging trees and shrubs away from your house, this can help stop fire spreading to your home.

2. Mow grass and remove cuttings. Having a cleared area around your home can help reduce fire activity.

3. Remove any material that can burn around your home. Things like wood piles, mulch and outdoor furniture.

4. Make sure your gutters a clear! Ember attacks can be potentially devastating to houses during bushfires.

5. Prepare your house by having a hose or hoses that can reach all points of your home that are also hooked up to a reliable water source. Sprinkler systems can also help protect property if you need to leave or are evacuated.

Remember, clearing areas around your home not only slow a spreading fire but gives firefighters safe areas to work.
