We welcome today’s announcement that the current State Government plans to recruit 1,500 more police and build a new police training academy in Melbourne’s west.

On 5 August, Maribyrnong joined Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Wyndham and Melton Councils calling for more police in the west.

More recently, those same Councils, together with Hume, called on the Victorian Government to establish a regional police training academy to help address police shortages across our growing communities.

Today’s announcement shows that strong, united advocacy for our communities works.

This also follows commitments from the opposition for additional police officers (3,000) and reopen stations if they form government after the election.

We welcome these commitments and will keep pushing to make sure Melbourne’s west gets the police presence, resources and frontline services our communities need.

Road Works in Footscray

Night Works are kicking off next Sunday 20 September on Irving Street in Footscray.

These essential repairs between Nicholson Street and Hopkins Street will be done on Sunday night and weeknights between 8:30pm and 5am and take one week to complete. There will be intermittent access for vehicles and changes to pedestrian access and buses overnight.

This project was pushed back to avoid upcoming PTV replacement buses.

There will also be works on Hopkins Street on Sunday 13 September. These works will start at 6:30am and be completed by 5pm the same day.

Thank you for your patience while we repair our local streets.

More and bigger data centres in the west means greater impacts. We are calling on the State Government to give greater weight to community voices, consider the evidence, and get the planning right.
