🚔 OPERATION REGAL – DAY 2 ROAD SAFETY AWARDS 🏆

Today's award winners reminded us exactly why road policing matters...
(We will let you pick todays best and fairest)

🏆 "Wrong Way to Start Your Journey" Award
An e-bike rider was intercepted travelling the wrong way on the freeway. A timely reminder that road signs (Universal - NO ENTRY) aren't decorations.

🏆 "Eyes Anywhere But The Road" Award
16 drivers were caught using mobile phones.
Excuse of the day:
"I was checking Google for the traffic."
The traffic was easy to find - it was directly in front of you.

🏆 "Not Worth The Trip" Award
A 17-year-old rode a dirt bike to buy a clutch cable and ended up walking home after receiving multiple fines.

🏆 "Picture Worth a Thousand Dollars" Award
A 16-year-old riding his electric motorcycle stopped to take a photo of our breath testing site. He didn't notice two police BMW Motorcycles pulling up behind him until it was too late. Mum and dad won’t be framing that photo anytime soon.

🏆 "How Many Seatbelts Do We Really Need?" Award
A friend looking after children at a charity event decided to load five kids into a friend's car and take them for a drive (total 7 ppl in a 5-seater vehicle) - none of the children were wearing seatbelts. The children ended up getting home safely in an Uber, while the driver made a generous contribution to the Road Safety Fund and the vehicle took a trip to the impound yard.

🏆 "Supervision Needs a Supervisor" Award
A disqualified driver was found behind the wheel. His nominated supervising passenger was also disqualified from driving.

Every one of these interactions could have ended differently. Road rules aren't there to inconvenience you - they're there to get everyone home safely.

📵 Put the phone away.
🚦 Obey the signs.
🪪 Make sure you're licensed.
🔒 Wear your seatbelt.
🏍️ Make sure your motorcycle is mechanically safe and legally roadworthy.
👀 Keep your attention on the road.

🚛 Operation Regal – Day 2

Not off to the best start this morning.

Unfortunately, we attended a truck rollover on the M80 interchange to the Princes Freeway (Geelong-bound), which has also significantly impacted inbound traffic to the city.

Thankfully, the truck driver was safely rescued by our outstanding emergency service partners from Fire Rescue Victoria and Ambulance Victoria and is doing well in hospital. We also extend our thanks to the members of the public who stopped to assist at the scene.

📹 The Westgate Highway Patrol would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage. Please contact Crime Stoppers via the link - https://bit.ly/4unoBzY

❄️ Heading to the city or the snow today? Please consider an alternative route while emergency services and recovery crews work to clear the scene.

🚗 Road safety reminder: The only thing that should be rolling this weekend is your suitcase on the way to the snow. Take it easy on the roads - we're trying to keep our tow truck drivers bored.

🚔 OPERATION REGAL – DAY 1 🚔

Well... we've barely started and the nominations for today's Road Enforcement Awards are already rolling in.

🥇 The Frequent Flyer Award
One driver managed to get caught speeding through a school zone... then got caught again coming back the other way.
When we say "drive safely to and from your destination", this isn't what we mean.

🚗 The 'It's Not My Car' Award
A local member of our neighbouring HWP hotlist decided to drive his wife's car to work while disqualified.
The magistrate will want an explanation.
His wife probably will too.
The car, meanwhile, has commenced an all-expenses-paid holiday at the impound lot.

🏍️ The Triple Threat Award
A learner motorcyclist from Werribee was detected lane filtering at 93 km/h while dressed head-to-toe in black.
That's:
❌ Lane filtering as a learner
❌ No hi-vis vest
❌ No visible learner requirements
Some people collect Pokémon. Others collect offences.

🚦 The "Who's Driving This Thing?" Award
A female learner driver decided to drive straight through a red light directly in front of a marked HWP vehicle.
Unfortunately for her, the conversation became even more awkward when checks revealed she was driving without a supervising driver.
She'll now have to explain to Mum and Dad why the family car never made it home.

🍻 The Designated Driver Award
At one of our breath testing sites, members intercepted a learner driver being supervised by her husband.
The learner was doing exactly the right thing.
The instructor, however, wasn't.
A roadside breath test returned an alleged reading of 0.112.
Unfortunately, when your supervising driver is more intoxicated than qualified, the lesson comes to an abrupt end.
The vehicle has since been impounded.

🐝 The Stinger Removal Award
The Westgate HWP BMW sure took the sting out of a Kia Stinger after it was seen buzzing down the West Gate at 164 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.
That's less "grand tourer" and more "angry hornet".
The Stinger is now off to the impound hive for a 30-day stay.

📱📱 The Team Building Award
Our Solo Team patrolling the freeways managed to detect two drivers using their phones at exactly the same time.
It's great to see people working together.
Just not like this.
As we head into the long weekend, remember:
📱 = 4 demerit points + $611
That text can wait.
That notification can wait.
That reel showing a dog riding a skateboard can definitely wait.

Drive safe, make good choices, and try not to earn yourself a nomination for tomorrow's awards.

🚔 ILLEGALLY MODIFIED BIKES DETECTED 🚔

Today, Westgate Highway Patrol intercepted two young riders operating illegally modified mountain bikes on public roads.

One bike had been converted to electric power, while the other was fitted with a combustion engine. While officers acknowledged the impressive mechanical effort involved, these vehicles are not designed or approved for use on our roads.

On this occasion, both riders were issued official warnings, and their parents were relieved to avoid fines that could have exceeded $2,000.

⚠️ A reminder that riders who attempt to evade police may face significant penalties, including significant fines, vehicle impoundment or crushing.

Our concern is safety. Modified bicycles can reach speeds and operate in ways they were never designed for, increasing the risk of serious injury to riders and other road users.

Parents, guardians and friends - please keep an eye on the vehicles young people are riding and ensure they understand the road rules before heading out.

We would much rather have a conversation today than deliver bad news tomorrow.

A driver has had her license suspended and vehicle impounded after allegedly blowing more three times the limit of a fully licensed driver in Flemington yesterday.

Officers were performing a roadside alcohol and drug testing site on Fisher Parade when a Mazda CX3 drove through the booze bus site about 12.30pm on Thursday, 28 May.

The 57-year-old driver was spoken to by officers before she returned a positive preliminary breath test.

The driver was escorted into the booze bus where she returned an alleged evidentiary reading of .176.

Her vehicle was impounded for a period of 30 days at a cost of $966.50 and her license was immediately suspended for a period of 12 months.

The Maribyrnong woman is expected to be charged on summons.
