Winter has arrived in Victoria, which means shorter days, wet roads and mysteriously fewer Melbourne supporters at the MCG.

If you’re heading away this King’s Birthday long weekend, take extra care behind the wheel.

Changing road conditions can catch drivers out quickly - slow down, leave extra space between vehicles, avoid distractions and never drive impaired.

And if you’re heading to the snow, make sure you’re carrying and fitting wheel chains when required.

Victoria Police is urging motorists to take extra care on the roads as wet and wintery conditions are expected over the King’s Birthday long weekend.

As we recognise National Volunteer Week 2026 and its theme, ‘Your Year to Volunteer’, we also celebrate the action behind volunteering – stepping up, getting involved, supporting one another and strengthening our community through service, commitment and care.

Your contribution shows exactly how volunteering makes a real difference.

Thanks to our volunteer team at the CFA Koriella Fire Brigade for your time and efforts especially during the recent Longwood Fire event.

As we move forward an exceptional effort again for the organisation and participation of our recent annual Exercise Night Strike activity and its success.

All volunteer planned and run.

Your efforts for such a small Class 1 Wildfire Brigade are a credit to you and our little community.

Well done and thankyou 💪 🚒

Murrindindi Beanie & Fibre Festival

Country Tech

It’s a beauty and also a big thank you to local Kevin who donated the dryer.. thanks.

Each year the Murrindindi Beanie & Fibre Festival has great pleasure in giving back to the community monies raised from our fabulous fibre event held on the fourth weekend in May. The MBFF is this Weekend 23rd -24th May. In the first image, the Murrindindi Beanie & Fibre Festival Committee Members Sue Wynn, Carolyn Weeks & Pam Petersen handed over a 10kg washing machine recently purchased from Country Tech Alexandra and donated it to the Koriella Fire Brigade after they put the call out to the community, following the fires within Murrindindi Shire earlier this year. Pictured here is Anna Johnson, the recipient on behalf of the Koriella Fire Brigade". Thank you Anna.

A new national warning system called AusAlert will be used across Australia from October 2026.

AusAlert will be able to send warning messages to your mobile device as push notifications during:
• Natural hazards such as bushfires, floods, and tsunamis
• Public health emergencies
• Biosecurity incidents
• Security threats

Before the system is introduced, it will be tested.

In Victoria, a local test will happen in the Geelong suburbs of Highton and Belmont on Thursday 18 June at 2 pm, followed by a national test on Monday 27 July at 2 pm.

More about the tests and rollout of AusAlert will be shared on the VicEmergency page in the coming weeks.

Night Training Exercise – Koriella Fire Brigade

The Koriella Fire Brigade will be conducting a Night Strike training exercise on Friday 8 May 2026, from 6:00pm to 11:00pm in the Fawcett and Koriella areas.

This is part of our annual night training series and will involve local brigades from the Alexandra Group, along with a visiting Task Force from District 8. These exercises are an important way to strengthen skills, build relationships across districts, and ensure we’re ready when it matters most.

What to expect:
• Emergency vehicles operating in the area
• A simulated (mock) accident on private property
• A controlled training scenario involving a grass and scrub fire (no live fire risk to the public)
• Increased brigade activity along Spring and Stoney Creek Roads

This type of training helps prepare our volunteers for real-life incidents and ensures we continue to provide a strong, reliable response for our community.

Road safety reminder:
If you are travelling through the area on the night, please take extra care.
• Slow down and be alert
• Observe the 40km/h speed limit when approaching flashing lights
• Help keep our volunteers safe while they train

If you have any questions, please contact:
