UNAUTHORISED ENTRY TO OUR FIRE STATION

At 1129am this morning a male wearing a fluro orange adidas shirt with white stripes on the shoulders, a gold chain necklace, black track pants, white adidas runners with orange stripes (adidas Adizero SL2 running shoes) a bracelet on his right wrist and watch on the left entered our fire station via the rear door and left 8 minutes later carrying an item of equipment.

Yes we have very clear footage and sound and yes we’ll make a police report - however we’ll give you the opportunity to return the item to our back door tomorrow.

We’re sure you made an error of judgement taking from an emergency service, and a volunteer one to boot!

Please share our post in the hope that this person gains a conscience.

HAZARD REDUCTIONS POSTPONED DUE TO RAIN

Our proposed hazard reduction sites received between 5mm and 10mm of rain overnight. Whilst windy conditions today will help dry the fuels, we estimate that a few days of dry and windy weather will be required to bring the fuels back into range.

RFS members are actively checking sites so we are ready for the next opportunity. This involves our teams measuring fuel moisture in the ‘fuel moisture metre’ with the aim being to have average fuel moisture content no higher than 13% - 15%.

If we undertake activities when the fuel moisture is too high we end up with ineffective burns that will not reduce the risk to the levels we are aiming for.

As the community focuses more on our hazard reduction activities we will continue to post information about what goes into planning and executing a hazard reduction. In the meantime, it’s never too early to prepare your home. Cooler days are great for trimming back branches, planning for bush fires and working on making your home more resilient to bush fire risk.

It’s also the optimum time to join an RFS brigade near you. Get trained, build your skills, knowledge and resilience and work with other community members to make the Shoalhaven more resilient overall to the risk of bush and grass fires.

*******************************************************************

HAZARD REDUCTIONS SUNDAY APRIL 19 | Pending ongoing suitable conditions the RFS is planning to implement 4 hazard reduction burns in and around the Bay and Basin and 1 in Currarong on Sunday April 19.

We are closely monitoring the weather, as the rainfall forecast for coastal areas is variable. Our sites may tolerate some moisture between today and Sunday, however too much rain and insufficient time for drying will see these burns postponed.

CHANGED TRAFFIC CONDITIONS

Our planned hazard reduction burn in Woollamia on Sunday April 19 will require traffic management to be in place. Traffic controllers will manage the area of Woollamia Road between the village and Erina Road. The statutory bushfire danger period in the Shoalhaven ends at midnight on March 31.

Landowners in Rural Fire District who undertake vegetation pile burns after this date do not require a fire safety permit - however you still have an obligation to notify the RFS and your neighbours at least 24 hours before you commence burning.

Visit www.rfs.nsw.gov.au and click on the NOTIFY portal.

Don’t forget to check the weather forecast; bush and grass fires still occur in Autumn and Winter if conditions are conducive to the ignition and spread of fire.

PLANNING TOGETHER | DRAFT BUSH FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT PLAN NOW ON PUBLIC EXHIBITION

What makes a plan great is community feedback. The Bush Fire Management Committee first surveyed our community about 'What matters most' and then we ran thousands of bush fire scenarios using state of the art modelling. Our land managers and firefighters have worked together bringing their vast local knowledge to the process and now we want you, our Shoalhaven community to provide feedback.

NOT EVERYONE LIKES TO WORK ONLINE

We have 4 community drop in sessions with RFS risk planning staff available to discuss the draft plan and the strategic bushfire hazards and treatments.

You can drop in to one of these sessions for chat and take a moment to provide feedback.

TOTAL FIRE BAN SATURDAY JANUARY 10

A TOTAL FIRE BAN has been declared for the Shoalhaven from midnight tonight for 24 hours.

Common questions asked during a TOTAL FIRE BAN are:

Can I use a gas barbeque?

You can use a gas barbeque under the following conditions:
> It is under the direct control of a responsible adult, who is present at all times while it is operating;
> No combustible material is allowed within two metres at any time it is operating;
> You have an immediate and continuous supply of water; and
>The barbeque is within 20 metres of a permanent private dwelling such as a home; or
> The barbeque is within a designated picnic area and the appliance is approved by Council, National Parks or State Forest.

Can I use a barbeque or pizza oven which burns solid fuel (e.g. wood, charcoal or heat beads)?
> No you cannot.
> A barbeque or wood fire pizza oven which uses solid fuel, such as wood, charcoal or heat beads, can't be used outside during a Total Fire Ban.

Can I use fire during a Total Fire Ban if I have a fire permit?
> Permits are suspended on days of total fire ban.

ON THE SPOT FINES OF $2200 APPLY IF YOU LIGHT A FIRE DURING A TOTAL FIRE BAN.

PREPARE NOW

Are you prepared if a bush or grass fire threatens you? On days of EXTREME fire danger you should reconsider non-essential travel in high risk areas and consider packing emergency supplies such as drinking water and medications in case you cannot get back home.

Visit www.rfs.nsw.gov.au for more information.

UNATTENDED CAMP FIRES PUT OUR COMMUNITY AT RISK

RFS firefighters have extinguished numerous unattended illegal camp fires around our waterways today. These fires are in remote and difficult to access areas and put our community at risk.

Don't be 'that person' - understand the risk and know the rules. RFS and Police will be undertaking proactive patrols throughout the day.

FORECAST EXTREME FIRE DANGER CONDITIONS

As of 1030am today the forecast is for the Shoalhaven to experience EXTREME fire danger conditions tomorrow. With temperatures as high as 41 degrees, humidity as low as 15% and gusty hot winds the forecast conditions will make fires very difficult to control and pose an extreme risk to our responders and the community.

Under these forecast conditions fires will spread quickly and erratically, embers are likely to fall well ahead of the main fire, starting new and dangerous fires which could catch people unaware.

With extreme temperatures our firefighters will be at risk of heat related illness and direct attack on fires may not be feasible.

PREPARE NOW

- If you have not discussed your bush fire plan with family, do it today
- If you have not prepared your property by cleaning up around the house and removing leaves and loose vegetation, do it today
- Plan your day - avoid high risk areas if possible
- Pack emergency supplies in your vehicle such as drinking water - roads could be blocked by fires stranding people in 40 + temperatures

SEEK ADVICE

Visit the RFS website www.rfs.nsw.gov.au for information or download the Hazards Near Me app and set a watch zone with notifications.

MONITOR THE SITUATION

Proactively monitor the situation throughout the day. Visit the RFS website for major fire updates or check in on Hazards Near Me.

REPORT ALL FIRES

A timely response if critical during these conditions. Report all fires to '000' immediately and provide the location, a description of what you can see and information on the fire, such as any properties nearby.

OFFICIAL FIRE DANGER RATINGS AND TOTAL FIRE BAN INFORMATION WILL BE RELEASED THIS AFTERNOON

INCREASING TEMPERATURES AND FIRE DANGER CONDITIONS

We're only part way through the heat wave as conditions continue to escalate over the next two days, prior to forecast relief on Sunday.

Fortunately, whilst it has been very hot and the landscape continues to dry out, we have not been experiencing gusty wind conditions which are a big driver of erratic fire behaviour.

But... the forecast for Saturday is a return to gusty westerly winds for most of the day and into the night, coupled with temperatures in the 40's. These conditions would combine to further elevate fire danger ratings and make any fire very challenging for crews.

NOW IS THE TIME TO PREPARE

Don't leave it to chance, discuss your plans with family and know what you will do if a fire threatens you. Review your plans for the day, consider your health and safety in regards to heat and fatigue and make preparations in the event of bush and grass fires.

Further information is available at: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au
