St Bernard's College Essendon St Bernard's College - the man he will become. Catholic Boys' Secondary College - Essendon, Victoria.
'Achieving Excellence by Learning and Doing'

St Bernard's College is a single-gender Catholic Secondary School offering a wide range of formal classes, and also a comprehensive informal curriculum, to more than 1400 young men from Year 7 through to Year 12. The students are expected to be personally enthusiastic about involving themselves in the broad educational spectrum offered by the school. This applies especially to their growth in an i

nformed appreciation of their Faith as an integral and essential part of that broad education. Though our student population is drawn mostly from those who have attended local Catholic Primary Schools, and whose families have been actively supportive of their sons' ongoing education in the Catholic faith through consistent involvement in their parish communities, consideration is always given to students who can demonstrate special circumstances. There is no selective academic entrance exam. Set in extensive grounds on the side of Steele Creek Valley in West Essendon, the College is administered as two separate campuses—Years 7 to 9 and Years 10 to 12—who share the same site. This fosters a closer sense of community on each campus.

FOURTH IN VICTORIA 🏌️🏆

Well done to students Sam, Hugh and Jai who represented the College at the SSAV Golf Championships, held at Lonsdale Links last month. Collectively, their efforts resulted in a commendable fourth-place finish in the team event, a strong achievement at state level.

The boys earned their place at this prestigious event after being part of the winning ACC team in March. Facing the challenging coastal conditions of Lonsdale Links, all three students displayed composure, resilience and a high level of golfing ability.

Beyond their performances, the students represented the College with professionalism and outstanding sportsmanship throughout the day. Their progression from ACC champions to a top-four finish at SSAV level is an excellent achievement, and we congratulate them on their efforts!

This week is National Blood Donor Week, and we’d like to celebrate all in our community who roll up their sleeves in support of Lifeblood. We have an amazing donor team at St Bernard’s College, so give yourselves a pat on the back—this week is for you!

Did you know it’s not only adults who need donated blood? Kids need it too—for cancer treatment, chronic illness and trauma.

If you’re thinking of joining our team, you can donate with Lifeblood this National Blood Donor Week (8–14 June) or until 19 July to show your support with a limited-edition donor bandage by David Booth. It’s inspired by real drawings by children at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Adelaide.

See the kids in action, learn more or book a donation at https://links.lifeblood.com.au/ASlj/6h3hbmr2

Reconciliation Week at St Bernard’s was filled with engaging activities and meaningful moments that united our school in a shared purpose.

We began each day with a shared moment in homerooms where students learned more about First Nations culture and history through videos and stories. The week kicked off with a fundraising BBQ that successfully raised money for our friends at the Miriam Rose Foundation, an organisation working to improve education opportunities and quality of life for First Nations youth.

Last Friday’s lunch was filled with excitement as staff faced off against students in a game of Buroinjin, a ball game long played by the Kabi Kabi people of Southern Queensland that shares similarities with rugby and handball. Despite coming up against an all-star staff team (who arguably had the favour of the umpires!), our student team were simply too good.

Finally, a team made up of our FIRE Carriers , student leaders and staff walked along the Maribyrnong river early on Wednesday morning, braving the freezing cold to emulate Michael Long’s famous ‘Long Walk’ and reflect on the continuing journey of reconciliation.

We thank our Identity team for their work in marking this occasion and our whole school community for embracing the meaning of Reconciliation Week. Special mention must go to our FIRE Carriers who dedicated themselves to the activities and brought many others along with them - they truly embraced this year's Reconciliation Week theme of ‘All In’. We look forward to continuing this important journey of reconciliation and recognition of our shared history.

Our VCE Art students traded the classroom for the city on a recent excursion, soaking up inspiration from Melbourne’s vibrant arts scene. 🎨

They explored The Dax Centre at the University of Melbourne, which houses work exploring the impacts of mental health, and the use of art therapy as a diagnostic, research and recovery tool, providing a window into people’s experiences of mental illness. A behind-the-scenes tour with expert curator Nathan Schroeder gave students a closer look at exhibition design and the care that goes into art conservation.

The day finished at the State Library with two standout exhibitions: Rebel Heart (a look at how culture and time shape the way we express emotion through language and music) and Creative Arts (the journey from first idea to finished artwork).

Some exciting AFL news this week as 4 St Bernard’s boys have been selected for the Vic Metro squad in the 2026 Under-18 National Championships!

2025 graduates Sam Harris and Nic Staropoli have been chosen for the main squad, while current students Nate Jenkins and Tevita Rodan are named in the train-on list. All 4 play for the Calder Cannons at AFL Talent League—the highest-level junior competition in Victoria.

This is a massive achievement for these boys and a reward for their effort and preparation both on and off the field. Kudos as well to our dedicated staff and coaches, who provide fantastic support to all our students pursuing AFL.

Congratulations to Josh, Emanuel, Sam, Nicholas, and Josh for their outstanding efforts in the ACC Culinary Competition on Friday 22 May!

The team prepared Duck à l’Orange and a Lemon Myrtle–Infused Poached Pear, demonstrating great skill and creativity in both presentation and Indigenous dish ex*****on.

We are proud to share that the team received a Silver Medal for their entry—an excellent achievement and a reflection of their dedication, effort and teamwork throughout the competition. 🥈

This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without our dedicated Food Studies team, who dedicated additional time to train and prepare our students, and our staff who assisted with transport on the day.

Congratulations all, this was an amazing team effort!

On Thursday 7 May, select students from the Year 7, 8, and 9 Able & Ambitious program represented the College at the Da Vinci Decathlon held at PEGS, competing against some of Melbourne’s leading academic schools. 🎓

The Da Vinci Decathlon is a challenging academic competition that requires students to work collaboratively across ten disciplines, including Mathematics, Engineering, Science, English, Code Breaking, Cartography, and Creative Producers. Throughout the day, students were required to think critically, solve complex problems, and apply creativity under pressure.

All students represented the College with enthusiasm, resilience, and teamwork throughout the competition.

We are especially pleased to share that the Year 8 team achieved equal third place in Mathematics alongside Melbourne Grammar.

Congratulations to all students involved on their outstanding efforts and the way they represented the College!
