Dear Glen Innes Severn community,
I regret to inform you that I have decided to resign from the Council. This decision, while difficult, comes after careful consideration of recent developments and my ability to serve effectively in the current context.
The recent election results demonstrated strong community support for our previous leadership. I received 28% of primary votes, while former Deputy Mayor Troy Arandale received 14.8%. Furthermore, 41% of voters placed me as their first or second preference, with 38% doing the same for Troy Arandale. In contrast, the selected Mayor and Deputy received only 17% and 16%, respectively, as first or second preferences. This significant margin suggests clear confidence from the community in our direction and accomplishments over the past 2 years and 9 months. I see this as a strong indication that we were doing a good job, and I'm deeply grateful for this trust.
However, despite this clear community support, I feel the current councillors have not prioritised the best interests of the community in their decision-making. This disconnect between community sentiment and councillors actions is a key factor in my decision to resign.
My resignation stems from concerns about the current leadership's capacity to address critical issues facing our community. The complex challenges ahead require leaders with substantial business experience who can dedicate full-time attention to the role. Without this, I believe the Council may struggle to implement necessary decisions effectively.
Glen Innes Severn Council faces significant decisions in both the short and long term. I hope the new leadership team can commit the necessary time and resources to navigate these important issues.
I must address the concerning issue of personal disagreements among councillors that have become public. Such behaviour has no place in Council decision-making and reflects poorly on those unable to separate private matters from Council business. I urge all councillors to prioritise our community's needs above personal differences.
To my supporters, thank you for your invaluable encouragement. I look forward to continuing to engage with our community in different ways.
As I step away, I wish the best for our Council and community. May future decisions strengthen and improve Glen Innes Severn for all residents.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve.
Sincerely,
Rob Banham
