Last week, over 200 student leaders from 24 of our 28 schools across the region travelled to Emerald Town Hall for the Annual Mayoral Student Leaders Summit.

The day was filled with inspiration, leadership, collaboration and big ideas for the future. Students heard from keynote speaker Eric Agyeman, who shared a powerful message that no matter your background or mistakes, you can still rise and make your life count.

Eight schools also presented their ideas around the topic: Designing a Youth Event or Initiative. If your school was selected to plan and deliver a local event or initiative for young people, what would it be?

Interestingly, many schools landed on a similar idea… movie nights! 🎬🍿

With the popularity of these ideas, keep an eye out these school holidays β€” there may be some exciting youth movie events coming your way!

A huge thank you to all students, teachers and schools involved for making the day such a success.

A huge thank you to the students from Blackwater, Emerald and Springsure State High Schools who attended yesterday’s English Conversation session with our Sister City, Ichinoseki at the Emerald Council Office!

Our students had the opportunity to listen to presentations from Ichinoseki students about their region, all delivered in English, followed by a lively Q&A session. There were definitely some surprised faces when learning just how long school days are in Japan and that students clean their own classrooms!

It was fantastic to see everyone engaging, asking questions and building connections across cultures.

Students also enjoyed sharing lunch together with Subway, sushi and Hata drinks.

A special mention to our currently selected Sister City Exchange students who joined us to start building connections with the students they may soon be staying with, such an exciting step in their journey!

And thank you to Mayor Moriarty for stopping by to chat with students and show support for this important cultural exchange.

Ichinoseki, formerly Fujisawa Town, and the Central Highlands Regional Council, formerly Duaringa Shire, have proudly been sister cities for over 30 years, with the relationship formally established in 1993. A partnership that continues to create meaningful connections and opportunities for young people.
