A prescribed burn is planned at Bascombe Well Conservation Park on the Eyre Peninsula for Thursday, 8 October, weather conditions permitting.

The prescribed burn will start at 1:00pm and is likely to be completed by 7:00pm. Flames and smoke may be visible within the burn area for several days.

◾The area to be burnt is 124 hectares, 30 kilometres west of Lock.

◾This is a landscape protection burn.

◾Internal park tracks adjacent to the burn area will be closed throughout the burn.

◾Smoke is likely to drift south of the burn area.

National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia (NPWS) crews will remain on site until safe.

NPWS conducts a statewide program of prescribed burns to reduce the spread and intensity of bushfires, protect communities and enhance biodiversity.

Prescribed burning is just one tool used to reduce fuel loads across strategic areas of public and private land.

Prescribed burns will only be carried out when it is deemed safe to do so and may be cancelled at short notice.

Following our recent call-out to South Australian artists, a reminder that there is still time to ask questions about Council’s RSL Memorial Building Mural Project before the enquiry period closes.

If you’re considering submitting a proposal, now is a good time to review the Artist Brief and submission information, seek clarification on any of the project requirements, or arrange an optional site inspection to take a closer look at the building and available wall areas.

🎨 Proposals close: 12 noon, Friday 6 November 2026

Artists can propose a design for one suitable wall or a coordinated concept across multiple wall areas, with preliminary concepts and ideas welcomed at this stage.

National Parks is scheduled to carry out a prescribed burn at Bascombe Well Conservation Park tomorrow, Thursday 8 October, approximately 30 km from Lock.

Smoke may be visible in the surrounding area. Please take care if travelling nearby.
