CHECK YOUR BLEEPING SMOKE ALARMS!

Did that get your attention? Good. So will a WORKING smoke alarm. Keep Reading!⬇️

Today is National Smoke Alarm Action Day.
A working smoke alarm is your best early warning of a fire, giving you and your loved ones precious time to get out, stay out, and call Triple Zero (000).

📊 During winter 2024, NSW experienced 1,001 residential fires, resulting in 105 injuries and 12 fatalities.
📊 Throughout 2024, there were 3,674 home fires and 25 fatalities across NSW.
📊 In 45% of homes where a fire occurred, there was no working smoke alarm.
Don't become a statistic.

Take 30 seconds today to test your smoke alarms and replace the batteries if needed. It could save your life.
At least 1 working smoke alarm is legally required on every level of the home, but just like you only need the minimum tread on a tyre, youll be glad you have more when it counts.

Did you know that 1 in 2 people don't know how to test their smoke alarm? We can help!

🔥 FIRE PERMITS & BURNING OFF 🔥

Did you know that if you live in a Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Fire District, you are required to obtain a fire permit all year round, regardless of season — not just during the Bush Fire Danger Period?

This applies to, but is not limited to:
✔️ Pile burns
✔️ Burning vegetation
✔️ Hazard reduction
✔️ Any fire that may impact nearby buildings or property

⚠️ Important reminders:
📍Fire permits are suspended on Total Fire Ban days.
📍You must notify neighbours and your local fire station prior to lighting.
📍Fires must be supervised at all times, and safely contained.

🚒 To learn more about FRNSW Fire Permits, see here:
https://www.fire.nsw.gov.au/incidents/fire-permits

🏛️ Council / Environmental Approval
You may also require approval from your local council.
In the Bega Valley, you may have “blanket approval” if conditions are met, or you may need to apply directly to council.

If you are outside of the FRNSW District (Pink on the map below), you need to follow the NSW RFS Rules and Permits process.

FRNSW 286 Eden responded to reports of a shop fire early this morning.
On arrival, crews observed large volumes of black smoke issuing from the premises. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the structure and located the seat of the fire, which was contained to the shop of origin.
The fire caused extensive smoke damage within the affected shop, with minor smoke migration into the adjoining premises.
A positive pressure ventilation fan was utilised to remove smoke from both shops. The area was rendered safe and secured.
The incident was handed over to NSW Police for further investigation

This morning crews from FRNSW 286 Eden and 286 Hazmat responded to a single-vehicle accident where the vehicle left the roadway, travelled down an embankment and came to rest in a creek.
NSW Ambulance treated the driver at the scene before transporting them to South East Regional Hospital, Bega, for further assessment.
Due to the impact, a substantial amount of oil and fuel entered the waterway. Hazmat officers deployed absorbent pads and containment booms to prevent the spread of contamination and successfully recovered the product. The area was subsequently rendered safe.

Take care stay safe.
