Hey Coasties,

Don't let a cold snap lead to a mishap! 🚒🔥 It's now time to put all your home fire safety knowledge into place. If you need a quick refresher:

👉 Check your smoke alarms. You will not smell smoke while asleep. Only working smoke alarms save lives.

👉 Keep everything one metre from the heater and check it before you use it. If you suspect a fault, have the heater checked by a qualified repairer or replace it.

👉 Test your electric blanket before use. Lay it on top of your bed and feel the internal wires for any sharp or weird bumps and inspect the cords and controls for damage. Turn it on for five minutes and then feel for any uneven hot spots. If you notice any of the above, the electric blanket needs to be replaced.

👉 Never use external heating equipment inside your home. This includes those that use 'heat beads' or LPG as a fuel source. This type of equipment is not suitable for indoor use and can lead to a build-up of carbon monoxide which could be fatal. All heating devices should be used in accordance with manufacturer's recommended practices.

👉 Ensure your flues and chimneys are clean and place a fire screen in front of open fires. Make sure your wood pile sits at least a metre away from the fireplace.

👉 Having a home escape plan in conjunction with a working smoke alarm will greatly increase your chances of getting out safely. Every second counts. If there is a fire in your home, do not wait, EVERY SECOND COUNTS, GET OUT and STAY OUT and then call Triple Zero (000). Never go back inside a burning building.

What an incredible day at the Open Day with 🚒 Fire and Rescue NSW Station 304 Gosford 🔥🚒

A massive THANK YOU to all the mums, dads, grandparents and especially the kids who came down to the station to see what we get up to behind the engine bay doors. The turnout from the community was amazing and we think the kids may have enjoyed climbing in and out of the trucks more than we enjoy it!

Throughout the day everyone got hands-on with:
🔥 Checking out all the equipment on our fire trucks
🚒 Climbing through the appliances and sitting in the drivers seat.
👨‍🚒 Watching one of our firefighters get dressed into full turnout gear with his BA cylinder and mask
🚗 Seeing a live side removal demonstration on a car
🚨 Learning about smoke alarms and home fire safety
🧯 Having a go at using a fire extinguisher and spraying some water around with hose line.

The smiles, excitement and endless questions from the kids made the day incredibly worthwhile for all of us. Community engagement days like this are a fantastic reminder of why we love serving Gosford and the Central Coast community.

And remember:

🚨 Working smoke alarms save lives! 🚨

Please check your smoke alarms regularly and make sure everyone in your home knows what to do if a fire starts.

Thanks again everyone for making the day such a success… we loved having you at the station!
