Today we celebrate Global Day of Parents and recognise the vital role parents and caregivers play in giving children the best start in life.

This year’s theme, “Together for Parents,” highlights the importance of connection, support, and community in the parenting journey.

Parenting can be rewarding—but also challenging. Every family’s experience is unique, and no one should have to do it alone. With the right support, time, and understanding, parents and caregivers can build strong, nurturing foundations for their children.

As Child and Family Health Nurses within Western NSW Local Health District, we are proud to walk alongside families—offering guidance, support, and care through every stage of early childhood.

Today, we acknowledge and celebrate parents, carers, and families across our communities, and the important role they play everyday

Today is World No To***co Day

In many countries, young people aged 13–15 are now overtaking adults in va**ng rates. This is a growing concern—and a trap for the next generation.

To***co and va**ng industries continue to target young people, whose developing brains are more vulnerable to ni****ne addiction.

Va**ng can harm more than many realise:

🧠 Ni****ne is highly addictive and can affect brain development in people under 25
☠️ V**e aerosols can contain toxic chemicals
🫁 Va**ng is linked to increased risk of lung problems
❤️ Va**ng may increase the risk of heart disease

As Child and Family Health Nurses within Western NSW Local Health District, we are committed to supporting families to make informed choices and protect children and young people.

Creating healthier, smoke-free and vape-free environments gives every child the best possible start in life.

Stronger action is needed to protect young people, including reducing the appeal of va**ng products through tighter controls on flavours, marketing, and product design.

All young people from 2 to 17 years of age in NSW are now eligible for the free nasal spray flu vaccine.

Expanding eligibility aims to boost statewide vaccination rates and make it easier for families - especially those with children who dislike needles.

The nasal spray flu vaccine is gentle, painless and available for free for a limited time at GPs, Aboriginal Medical Services and pharmacies.

Influenza (flu) is serious but isn’t as scary if you’re vaccinated. A flu vaccine offers you and your child the best protection from serious illness.

Food Allergy Week 2026

Food Allergy Week was created by Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia to raise awareness of food allergy in Australia.

Australia has one of the highest rates of food allergies in the world, with almost 2 million Australians living with a food allergy. We also have one of the highest rates of hospital admissions for anaphylaxis, with a 51% increase in emergency presentations over 5 years—now more than 11,500 each year.

This week is a reminder for all of us to work together to keep children and families safe. Awareness and education can help reduce the risk of allergic reactions and ensure we respond quickly and effectively in an emergency.

2026 Theme:
Recognise the signs, be ready to react

Your local Child and Family Health Nurse is here to support you and your family, working alongside your allergy specialist to help you feel confident managing food allergies.

Often parents feel unprepared for all the new tasks and challenges they might face, especially with their first baby, when you might be changing a nappy or bathing a baby for the first time ever. Sometimes this can lead to worries about how to care for your baby.

Kayla, PANDA volunteer says: “When we finally came home, the reality hit. We were suddenly responsible parents despite having received no formal training beyond, ‘Here you go, good luck.’ Safe to say my mental health was in a bit of a state.”

Head to the Raising Children website for information on everything to do with caring for your baby, their health, and managing any health concerns you might have.

And if you feel like your worries are impacting your life, PANDA is here for a chat on 1300 726 306.
