Mt Lindesay BFB Volunteers are thrilled to have been successful in their bid for a Western Power grant, through Bushfire Volunteers WA, to purchase a Thermal Imaging Camera for the brigade.

Thermal imaging cameras assist us to identify hotspots (including underground, such as burning tree roots or burning vegetation pushed into mounds by earthmovers, and above ground, eg logs and stags with fire deep inside). This ensures we can be much more efficient and effective at extinguishing these, which if left unattended can become a source of reignition or fire escape from containment lines.

Thanks again, Western Power and Bushfire Volunteers WA - we are stoked and promise to put it to good use!

Last week, volunteers from Mt Lindesay BFB, Ocean Beach BFB, William Bay BFB and Carmarthen BFB traveled across to help our neighbours to the east for a few days. First stop Lake King, then rapid redeployment to Fitzgerald River National Park, which became an absolute beast of a fire. In total over 169,000ha were burnt, in a biodiversity hotspot - just heartbreaking. Care was required to avoid damaging cultural heritage sites, minimise the impact of heavy machinery through sensitive habitat, and to prevent the spread of phytophtera (dieback) which is more dangerous than fire in this pristine wilderness.

We're glad to be home and clean and rested, ready to roll out to the next job. It was awesome to work as a team alongside volunteers and paid firefighters from across the state, even some from the Kimberley!

Check out this absolutely magic hose bowl by 18yo Otto!

Otto was straight back to studying for his ATAR physics exam after the games and we think he's got some pretty solid applied physics knowledge going on here 🤩🤩

September is for Spring Steps! Sometimes summer surprises us with an early start - don't be caught out.

As the weather warms up a little, the grass starts growing, and so should your mowing! It's a lot better to start early, and mow often, rather than waiting until the growth is out of control and the grass gets dry and dangerous. If your slasher hits a rock in cooler conditions you are less likely to start a fire, and then once your grass is low you can see the rocks easier.

Now is also the time to get your gutters free of winter debris, rake up all those fallen sticks and branches, check your downpipes and fittings and tanks for leaks, and create or update your emergency evacuation kit for your car.

The Shire of Denmark is encouraging all residents to prepare early for the upcoming bushfire season, with the 2025/2026 Firebreak and Property Management Notice (FPMN) arriving in mailboxes this week.

The annual notice, which outlines the steps every property owner must take to help reduce bushfire risk during the maintenance period from 1 December 2025 to 30 April 2026, is the first and final notice residents will receive.

This year’s FPMN includes information on the burning periods and what actions are permitted during these times, the responsibilities and requirements of property owners to meet compliance, the rules around camp and cooking fires, and other useful information to help our residents meet their obligations.

Shire President, Kingsley Gibson, said bushfire preparedness is something our community takes seriously, as reflected by the number of properties found to be compliant over the previous bushfire season.

“Over 80% of inspected properties across the Shire were found to be compliant during the previous maintenance period, which is incredible to see,” Cr Gibson said.

“I thank everyone for doing what is needed to keep our community safe during bushfire season.”

The Shire’s Authorised Compliance Officers will begin compliance inspections from 1 December, and fines may apply for properties that don’t meet the requirements of the notice.

Compliance inspections will continue throughout the season, and properties could be inspected multiple times during this period and must remain compliant throughout to avoid receiving an infringement.

To support residents, the Shire continues to offer resources via our website, including the free Book a Ranger program, available until the end of November.

“We encourage residents to act early, use the support available, and ensure their properties are compliant before December.”

Residents will receive this year’s FPMN with their Rates notice, either posted to them or as a link if they receive their rates notice via email.

June is for Jump On It! Get going on that firebreak maintenance, or establishing new access tracks. Check and clean your chimney flue (Denmark has several house fires every year from blocked flues), and catch and store as much of the rain as you can to build up your water supplies ready for summer.

Now's also a great time to snuggle in with a book or training resource by that newly cleaned fireplace, or attend a workshop or Bushfire Ready meeting, to start building your knowledge of bushfire preparedness ready to hit the ground running in Spring.

Over the weekend our Bushfire Volunteers had to attend 6 avoidable incidents.

Our amazing Volunteer Bushfire Brigades take time out of their weekends to keep us safe and stop these avoidable incidents from becoming out of control and putting our community at serious risk.

⚠️If you plan to burn you MUST be responsible for your burn.⚠️

Here’s some things you need to know:
❌ Don't burn on a day with a Fire Danger Rating of High, or greater.
❌ Don't leave your burn unattended.
❌ Don't burn green waste. Allow it to dry out first.
❌ Don't conduct your burn under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
✅ Do register your burn with DFES
✅ Do ensure you always have the ability and equipment to contain, control and extinguish your burn.
✅ Do let your neighbours know you plan to burn.
✅ Do have more than one person conducting the burn.

☎️ Call DFES Communication Centre on 9395 9209 to register your burn
☎️ If your burn escapes your control, call 000 immediately. It's far safer to get backup on scene quickly to reduce the risk of a serious bushfire than to try to tackle a situation beyond your control.

DFES has a Burn Smart Guide which is a key resource for anyone considering conducting a burn. Find it here:https://www.dfes.wa.gov.au/documents/BurnSmart_Guide_2021.pdf
