On International S*x Workers Day, the Northern Territory Anti-Discrimination Commission recognises and honours the rights, wellbeing, and dignity of s*x workers in our community. This day serves as an important reminder of the challenges s*x workers continue to face, including stigma, discrimination, and barriers to safety, equality, and inclusion.

In the Northern Territory, the Anti-Discrimination Act 1992 (NT) makes it unlawful to discriminate against someone on the basis of employment or engagement in s*x work. In addition, the decriminalisation of s*x work under the S*x Industry Act 2019 (NT) affirms the right of s*x workers to work lawfully, access protections, and engage with health and support services without fear of legal penalty or social exclusion.

We express our support for s*x workers and advocate for their right to live and work safely, free from discrimination and harm. Today, and every day, we reaffirm our commitment to fairness, respect, and equality for all people in the Northern Territory.

All In for National Reconciliation Week 2026
The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2026 is All In, a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day.

All In makes clear that reconciliation is not a spectator sport and that all of us must step away from the sidelines and take action to make change.

The theme also reminds us that reconciliation and advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights isn’t a passive activity, and it is not solely the responsibility of First Nations people, who have carried the weight of championing, explaining and acting for far too long.

Reconciliation will not happen by itself, and it will not happen without all of us.

National Sorry Day is a time to acknowledge the strength of the Stolen Generations and to reflect on the ongoing impacts of past government policies of forced child removal on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, families, and communities.

It is also a time to recognise the importance of truth-telling, healing, and meaningful reconciliation.

The Northern Territory Anti-Discrimination Commission acknowledges the deep intergenerational trauma caused by these injustices and supports continued efforts toward justice, equality, and healing.

We reaffirm our commitment to standing against racial discrimination and to promoting a Territory where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are respected, heard, and empowered.

May 17 marks the date in 1990 that homos*xuality was removed from the World Health Organisation Classification of Diseases.

International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Inters*x Discrimination and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) celebrates the progress we have made while also raising awareness for the discrimination that LGBTQIA+ people still face today.

The NT Anti-Discrimination Commission is pleased to host a series of online Thought Leadership Presentations.

This seventh presentation was delivered by Dr Anna Cody, Federal S*x Discrimination Commissioner at the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC).

The AHRC’s Equal Identities report explores challenges facing trans and gender diverse people across all domains of Australian society. It draws on the expertise, insight, lived and living experience shared in 97 submissions, as well as Australian and international research. It identifies what must change to ensure trans and gender diverse people can fully realise their human rights

The positive duty legal obligations require NT organisations to take positive action to prevent and eliminate discrimination for all 24 protected attributes, including s*x and gender identity, in all 7 areas where discrimination can occur, including work. Under the NT ADC minimum standards, leaders are to develop and display strong leadership that actively guides positive duty organisation culture to stamp out discrimination, through intentional leadership.

Creating inclusive workplaces requires whole-of-organisation commitment

Presentation overview:

We're excited to announce that the fourth event in our national seminar series, The Answer is Human Rights, will be in Darwin.

In partnership with the Northern Territory Anti-Discrimination Commission the FREE seminar is on Wednesday 20 May, 5:30pm – 7:00pm at Brown’s Mart, 12 Smith Street, Darwin City.

With growing concerns around social cohesion, the right to peaceful protest, housing affordability, economic inequality, and the impact of climate change and digital technologies, the seminar will focus on how human rights can help us address these and other challenging issues.

Featuring a panel of leading local and national human rights advocates, it’s a not-to-be missed event for anyone who cares about keeping our democracy healthy and strong as well as ensuring Australia and the NT are just, equal and inclusive places where everyone can feel safe and have opportunities to thrive.

The 2026 Positive Duty Oration was held on 29 April, with a key note address from Federal Disability Discrimination Commissioner Rosemary Kayess: addressing the demand side of employment.

The oration was followed by a panel discussion chaired by Anti-Discrimination Commissioner Jeswynn Yogaratnam. The panel was made up of Commissioner Kayess; Sarah Skopellos MAICD from HPA and NT Disability Advisory Committee; Larrakia elder and NDIA board member Dr Richard Fejo Snr; and Jennie Collis, General Manager NT Metcash Independent Grocers. This was an important conversation on the human rights of people with disability to access and participate in the workforce, and on what it takes to move from compliance to culture.

Both the oration and panel discussion were recorded, keep your eye on the ADC socials for the link when the recording is available.
