🚒 Training Night 🚒
Last night our members participated in one of our mandatory annual training sessions: Heat Awareness. All volunteers are required to complete this training before heading out onto the fireground, and for good reason — heat illness is a very real and serious risk for firefighters, especially working in the Top End climate.
During the session we covered the signs and symptoms of heat-related illness, from the early warning signs through to the serious consequences that can occur if symptoms are missed or left untreated. We also discussed how every member has different capabilities and limits, and how the activities we do in our everyday lives can impact how we perform on the fireground. As volunteers, it’s important that we understand and manage this to help keep ourselves and each other safe.
A huge thank you to our member Andrew for running the course. One of the strengths of our brigade is the experience, skills and knowledge our members bring from their personal lives, workplaces and other roles. We don’t rely solely on captains, training officers or committee members — we utilise the expertise across our entire brigade to help strengthen and support every member.
This training was also delivered using both face-to-face and online platforms, with the online session remaining fully interactive through voice and messaging functions. This allows members who may be working, travelling, or balancing caregiving responsibilities to still participate and receive the same level of interaction and engagement as those attending in person when they absolutely can’t make it to the station.
Our weekly brigade nights are also open to members of the public who may be interested in learning more about what we do. Whether you’re considering joining, want to watch some of our training, sit in and listen to meetings, or simply come along for a chat on our social nights, you are always welcome to come down and meet the crew.
