Darwin RSL Sub-Branch

Darwin RSL Sub-Branch The RSL Darwin Sub-Branch's aim is to support the welfare and interests of its members who are serving or former serving ADF members.

We do this with the guidance of our RSL charter, effecting the pillars of RSL service. The Mission of the Returned and Services League, Darwin Sub-Branch, is to ensure that programs are in place for the wellbeing, care, compensation and commemoration of serving and former Defence Force members and their dependants, and promote government and community awareness of the need for a secure, stable and

progressive Australia. Our core business revolves around the 5 pillars of:

Advocacy
Services
Mateship
Commemoration and
Sustainability

Darwin RSL consists of two separate committees:
1. The Darwin RSL Sub-Branch, or “League”
2. Darwin RSL Inc, or “Social Club”

There are now approximately 2,500 social members and 400 service members. Records show that by the end of January 1918, the Darwin Branch of the Returned Soldiers and Sailors Imperial League was meeting regularly at the Palmerston Institute. In 1922 a Soldiers’ Memorial Hall was completed by a local builder, Harold Snell, who had served in France and the Hall was later opened on 20 October 1922. Snell later constructed many other major pre-World War II buildings in Smith Street. The Hall was built on the corner of Smith and Knuckey Streets, Darwin. During the early months of 1941 a series of meetings finalised a constitution applicable to a licensed Club, which opened the Darwin RSL to community members. The licensed Club opened for business in the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall on 6 June 1941. The original building was sold in 1970, and trading continued in temporary premises until the existing building on Cavenagh Street Darwin, was completed in 1972. This building has since been extended and its interior upgraded on a number of occasions.
