Maria Island's management plan is up for renewal, and it is important that we all have input into this process. These plans are the most important document to provide the legal framework for how a National Park is used and managed. The last management plan for Maria Island was written in 1998, well before the increased interest from interstate and international tourism for the island.

The plan outlines strategies for the management of Maria's flora and fauna, infrastructure maintenance and development, managing sensitive cultural and heritage values, World Heritage values, Marine Protected Area management and visitor services management and opportunities.

Maria Island National Park has become a tourism drawcard for the incredible and unique values that it has to offer. However, these values are not just for tourism, which is why this plan is more than just a tourism management strategy.

You may have an idea or suggestion on upgrading walking tracks, for installing additional toilets, for better protecting shore birds, increasing cultural awareness, identifying hazardous areas for future visitor engagement, w**d control or signage and interpretation.

Your suggestions may also be specific to tourism development and Maria Island's increasing visitation. Considering this plan will govern Maria Island's management for many years, it is critical to get this right.

If you do want to make comment, we encourage you to put your suggestions in writing to PWS and Inspiring Place (Inspiring Place is the Hobart consultancy developing the recommendations of the plan based on the community input).

Submissions will close Monday June 7th at 9am. Submissions should be emailed to [email protected]

The sea caves around and near to Maria Island are mind blowing in their size and colour. Some are stunning limestone caves with calcite stalactites and 280Ma shell fossils. These caves however are made of rainbow coloured granite and are found within ile Des Phoques, a small granite island North of Maria Island. The caves and island are home to Australian fur seals and offer incredible scuba diving!

A glassy calm Mistaken Cape (Raggedy Head) is a rare sight. This is Maria Island’s eastern most point and as such it always catches the wind, swell and tide. On our circumnavigation cruise of Maria Island, we stopped above a giant granite pinnacle that rises from 60m to 6m below the surface. It is a highly regarded dive site in Tasmania but one that is extremely challenging to dive due to the weather. This weekend would be perfect!

Meet Darroch. 👋

He's a CPSU Delegate, Visitor Services Officer and Discovery Ranger on the beautiful Maria Island National Park. Or as he likes to call it the "bonny wee island off the great island off the huge island". Darroch loves to share his passion for one of the most unique national parks in the world.

He's one of the many Parks & Wildlife workers who keeps our Parks & Reserves beautiful and accessible for all of us and future generations. Despite their important work, the service is hugely underfunded.

Getting to Maria Island is half the fun! On the way you will encounter amazing wildlife and stunning views of Tasmania’s east coast. If you are lucky, dolphins like this Bottlenose will leap ahead of the ferry and es**rt you across the Mercury Passage 🐬

Maria Island is a sanctuary for iconic native wildlife like wombats. They were introduced onto the island in the late 1960s from Flinders Island as they were thought to be genetically divergent from the Tasmanian common wombat! They tend to be slightly smaller in size and produce trademark flowing blonde fur. They are now recognised as a distinct subspecies of the bare nosed common wombat called Vombatus ursinus ursinus - Common wombat (Bass Strait). We can’t wait to get back to Maria Island once community restrictions are lifted to enjoy one of Tasmania’s much loved National Parks ❤️
