Much of Mitch Cairns' work is informed by concrete poetry – the transformation of text into visual or spatial form. 'Polaroid Sketch' is a 10,000-word wall poem originally commissioned for the 2022 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art, iterated at NAS Gallery for the first time.
This epic work has a small beginning, drawn from the inscriptions on four Polaroids that Cairns found amongst his late uncle's belongings. They capture his uncle's pets (three cats and a dog), noting their names and locations: in a bag, in a box, in the kitchen, and on the verandah.
Spanning four metres high and seven metres wide, its enormous scale and cumulative effect become consuming and hypnotic.
'Artist's Mouth' continues at NAS Gallery until July 11. Open Monday to Saturday, 11am–5pm.
