💬 Introducing Teen Talk Tuesday!

We asked young people at the Dakabin Youth Hub a series of questions about what they wish adults understood about being a teenager.

They shared their thoughts, experiences, and perspectives with us.

Now we're listening. 👂

Each Tuesday, we'll share some of what young people had to say, along with practical ideas and information to help parents and carers better understand and support the young people in their lives.

Because sometimes, understanding young people starts with simply listening to what they have to say. 💙

👀 Our first Teen Talk Tuesday is coming next week!

💤 Getting Teens Back Into a Sleep Routine for School 💤
As the school year approaches, many teens’ sleep routines have shifted — later nights, later mornings, and tired days. This is common during adolescence, but supporting sleep now can make a big difference to mood, concentration, and mental health once school starts.

The Black Dog Institute shared some great, evidence‑based tips during Sleep Health Week to help teens gently reset their sleep patterns. We’ve shared them here for parents who are trying to support their young person without adding extra pressure.

💙 A reminder for families:
Teen sleep struggles aren’t about laziness — they’re about biology, development, and stress. Small, gradual changes and lots of support go a long way.
If sleep issues are ongoing or starting to affect your teen’s wellbeing, the Hub team is here to help 💬

💙 AUT to Know: Ready, Set, School – For Parents of Autistic Young People 💙

If you are a parent or carer of an autistic young person or teenager, school transitions can continue to bring challenges — whether that’s moving into high school, navigating senior years, or returning to education after time away.

We’d like to share this free AUT to Know webinar, created specifically to support families of autistic children and young people:
🎥 Ready, Set, School
👉 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4Xf7GiyfDo

While this webinar is often linked to early schooling, it includes important and relevant guidance for parents of teens, particularly around supporting wellbeing, confidence, and participation in school environments that don’t always fit every autistic young person.

✨ Key takeaways for parents of autistic teenagers include:
✔️ “School readiness” is ongoing and looks different at every age and stage
✔️ Emotional safety, regulation, and connection are essential for learning — especially during adolescence
✔️ Predictability, visual supports, and clear communication help reduce anxiety around change
✔️ Supporting self‑advocacy and autonomy becomes increasingly important during the teen years
✔️ Collaboration between parents, young people, and schools can greatly improve outcomes
✔️ Progress is individual — focusing on strengths, interests, and goals matters more than comparison

🌱 This webinar offers reassurance that it’s never too late to build skills, supports, and understanding — and that small, thoughtful adjustments can make a big difference for autistic young people at school.

If you’d like to talk more about school transitions or supports for your young person, the Dakabin Youth Hub team is always here 💬
