Our unit is sad to share that our former member, Wally Tillmanns, has made his final crossing of the bar.

Wally was an incredibly dedicated member of our unit, beginning as a crew member in 1996, before becoming a qualified skipper, gaining his master 5 Coxswains certificate.

Wally's service to our unit and the boating community he served, was unwavering. During his many years of faithful service, many boaters were saved and returned to their families in the 100's of day and night rescues that Wally led and participated in.

Wally was also very involved in many aspects of the day to day running of our unit, from fundraising with his wife Enid, maintaining the vessels and in supporting and mentoring new volunteers.

Unfortunately due to health reasons, Wally stepped down from the unit in 2017, but remained interested in the unit he had help shape.

We thank Wally for his skills, time, passion and generosity to our unit during his service, and for the way his service has made it a better place to be.

Please join us in offering our condolences to Enid and Wally's family at this time.

On Saturday evening at 7:53pm we received a distress call from a boater near Numbaa Island on Shoalhaven River. He was having engine trouble and was unsure that he could make it safely back to the ramp.

A crew call out was made, and Shoalhaven 20 was launched with Skipper Mark D and crew Steve C & Matt T on board. As they left the ramp, the boater who had been slowly and gently driving his boat to the ramp, was able to safely return.

Our crew had been shadowing the vessel nearby, ready to assist if and when the boater needed them.

This often can happen, we can call out a crew, after hours, but the vessel is able to get home safely under their own steam. Regardless of this our crew give up their time, at times leaving important family commitments, to be there to help boaters if and when they need us, to get home safely. Our crew returned to their families around 10pm.

After retiring from a rewarding career, it was important to Steve to be doing something that gave back to his community, something would make a difference in people's lives.

Having been a highly valued volunteer with the NSW Rural Fire Service for 10 years, he wanted to do something new that would build on what he had already learned and achieved, but that would also challenge him in new ways.

So Steve joined our unit. He recently completed his training as a radio operator, and has joined our roster, supporting boaters when they need it, by being a calm and confident voice on the radio. Steve also has been undertaking training as boat crew, and continues to enjoy developing new skills.

When asked what he enjoyed most about being a volunteer with Marine Rescue Shoalhaven, he said "All of it!". Steve said he finds it rewarding being with like minded people, the connection with the community all while promoting water safety practices.

Steve is a valuable member of our team, saving lives on the water.

Wow, what a night!

On Saturday the Gerroa Boat Fisherman's Club held their annual charity event, and what an event it was. Unit Commander James, with Kerrie, Vicki, Judy, Craig, Jenni, Paul, Mark & his two boys, Oliver & Jack represented our unit while having themselves a great time.

We were so impressed by how the Fisho's pulled out all the stops, with special guests Bluey, Chilli, Yogi Bear and Minnie and Mickey Mouse putting in appearances, which was enjoyed by young and old.

We are so humbled that not only did they choose us to be the recipient of this incredible event, the appreciation and gratitude for the way Marine Rescue Shoalhaven supports their members was reiterated to us throughout the event by both organisers and attendees.

Thank you again we are more grateful than we can say. Generous support from our community keeps our volunteers saving lives on the water.
