The journey to Tasmania was later retold by one of William and Sarah Lyne’s sons, John Lyne, who recorded that the family travelled to Van Diemen’s Land aboard the Hugh Crawford, a 450 ton ship commanded by Captain Langdon R.N.
The vessel left London on 25 June 1826 carrying 75 passengers, along with 30 crew, 350 merino sheep, 12 horses, a cow and calf, pigs and poultry. John noted that, remarkably, only one death occurred during the four month voyage.
Towards the end of the journey, the ship encountered poor weather and lost important parts of its rigging. Even so, life on board was not without its moments of enjoyment, with six musicians providing entertainment and dances being held during the voyage.
The Hugh Crawford arrived at Hunter Street Wharf in Hobart on 27 October 1826, marking the beginning of the Lyne family’s long history in Tasmania.

This is the beginning a story that’s now nearly 200 years in the making.
To mark this milestone, we’re planning a 200 year commemoration and Lyne family reunion on Saturday 31 October 2026.
Because it’s genuinely difficult to reach all descendants and branches of the family, we’re asking everyone to please share this post or this page with your own relatives and family groups as a first point of contact. We’ll be posting more details and updates throughout the year.
If you intend to attend, please email [email protected].
