Supporting Children with Anxiety

For some children, coming to school can feel overwhelming or worrying. Anxiety can develop for many different reasons, including separation from family, friendships, learning, changes in routine, new experiences, or worries about what might happen during the school day.
Over the next few weeks, we will continue to share tips, strategies and practical ideas to support students with managing anxiety and building confidence around school attendance. Each week, we will provide information and simple strategies that families can use at home to help children understand their worries, develop coping skills and feel more confident.
Our goal is to work together with families to support children to feel safe, connected and successful at school. Small, consistent steps can make a big difference.

R U OK? Day was today, serving as a national reminder to ask "Are you OK?" and listen to those who might be struggling.

For parents, this day provides an opportunity to check in on your children, teenagers, or even yourself and other family.

Ask open questions ("How are you going lately?"), Listen without judgment, Encourage action if they need support, and Check in later.
Tell them you love them no matter what and that their feelings matter.
Ask directly if worried: If you notice major changes, calmly ask if they are having thoughts of self-harm or su***de. Asking directly does not increase risk; it helps relieve distress.

Crisis support: If you or your child need immediate help, contact Lifeline on 13 11 14, Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636, or call 000 in an emergency.

Supporting Children with Anxiety 💛
Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing some helpful tips and strategies for families to support children experiencing anxiety.

Anxiety is a normal part of growing up, and all children experience worries and fears from time to time. Sometimes, however, anxiety can begin to impact a child’s everyday life, relationships, learning or participation in activities.

Throughout our upcoming posts, we’ll explore:
How to identify and recognise signs of anxiety in children.
Understanding what your child may be experiencing and what might be contributing to their worries.
Simple strategies you can try at home to help your child manage anxious thoughts and feelings.
Ways to support your child through moments of worry or fear.
How to encourage children to build confidence and develop their own coping strategies.
How families can work together with their child to face worries and practise helpful strategies.

Our aim is to provide families with practical, easy-to-use ideas that can be incorporated into everyday life. We hope these tips will help families feel more confident in recognising anxiety, responding to it, and supporting their child to manage their worries.
Remember, you don’t have to have all the answers. Listening, staying calm, acknowledging your child’s feelings and working through worries together can make a real difference.
Keep an eye out over the coming weeks for our Childhood Anxiety Tips & Tricks series!
