Overland Track Huts – Facilities & Features
There are six main public huts along the 65 km Overland Track, offering basic shelter and essential facilities — all on a first-come, first-served basis (no bookings). All walkers must carry a tent and sleeping mat in case huts are full. Each hut includes composting toilets, rainwater tanks (water must be treated), bunk platforms (no mattresses), and communal shelter areas for cooking.
Waterfall Valley Hut
First major hut after Cradle Mountain
Sleeps 34 in three rooms with a central communal area
Large deck, gas heater (on timer), solar lighting, drying room
Nearby tent platforms and camping area
Windermere Hut
Sleeps around 34
Scenic views toward Lake Windermere
Tank water and tent platforms available
New Pelion Hut
The largest hut on the track; sleeps up to 60
Indoor communal area, drying racks, gas heater
Group and individual tent platforms nearby
Kia Ora Hut
Located in lush rainforest setting
Basic bunk platforms and tank water
Close to several stunning waterfalls
Often fills quickly in peak season
Bert Nichols Hut
Spacious, and well-equipped
Comfortable sleeping areas, verandah, and indoor cooking space
Ideal final night before reaching Lake St Clair
Narcissus Hut
Located at the northern end of Lake St Clair
Sleeps around 20, includes bunks, toilet, tank water
Communal cooking room and radio to contact ferry
Echo Point Hut (Optional)
Small, remote hut halfway along Lake St Clair
Sleeps up to 8
Basic shelter with limited facilities
Often used by walkers skipping the ferry
Good to Know
Huts cannot be booked — arrive early in peak season
No mattresses or cooking gas provided
You must carry your own stove, sleeping mat, and warm gear
Each hut has a toilet and nearby camping area or tent platforms
