Coondle- Nunile Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade

Our latest brigade training last Sunday focused on drafting. An important skill for bushfire operations, particularly in areas where access to water tanks or hydrants may be limited.

Drafting involves drawing water from a static water source, such as a creek, dam or tank, directly into a fire appliance using its pump. For this session, our crews practised drafting from a local creek using different brigade appliances.

Using different trucks gave members the opportunity to become familiar with the different equipment and procedures across our fleet.
Building this broader knowledge is important, as the appliance you regularly train on may not always be the one you are working with at an incident.

A big welcome to Dylan, who has recently completed his foundation training and is now ready to join the Coondle-Nunile team on the fireground.
Completing the required training is an important first step, giving new volunteers the skills and knowledge they need to operate safely and effectively as part of a crew.

Since the start of winter, our brigade has responded to seven callouts, with the majority being structure fires.

While we’re a bushfire brigade, our members can be called upon to assist with a wide range of emergencies. It’s a great reminder of just how diverse volunteering with the brigade can be and how valuable our training and skills are across the community.

And it’s not too late to get involved.

With the next bushfire season approaching, now is the time to get involved. There isn’t a lot of time left to complete the training and become operational before the season gets underway.

First callout for 2026-2027

Monday marked our first callout of the new year, responding to a deliberately lit verge fire in Morangup.

One of our members attended and teamed up with another member from Toodyay Central Volunteer BFB.
It's a great reminder of how our local brigades work together to protect our community whenever they're needed.

Deliberately lighting fires puts lives, property and the environment at risk. If you see suspicious behaviour or a fire, please report it immediately.

Callout #1 (Season 26/27)- Mulch / Verge Fire. Morangup

We recently joined other brigades from across the Shire for a visit to Toodyay District High School.

It was a great day, with students learning about bushfire safety, emergency preparedness, and the role of volunteer firefighters. There was plenty of fun along the way, including hands-on activities with firefighting equipment.

Thank you to the school for having us and to the volunteers who attended and helped make the day such a success. We always enjoy the opportunity to connect with our community and share what we do.

Late last month, we responded to an escaped burn in the Coondle area. The fire affected a small surface but involved two large trees that required significant attention from crews to ensure the fire was fully extinguished and safe.

Fortunately, existing firebreaks helped contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further. Thanks to the quick response and efforts of our volunteers, the incident was brought under control safely and efficiently.

This serves as a timely reminder to always monitor burn activities closely and ensure appropriate precautions are in place.

Stay safe and be fire aware.

Last week, Toodyay's emergency services members came together for the annual Emergency Services Dinner. A great opportunity to catch up, reflect on the past year, and recognise the people who give so much of their time to keeping our community safe.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the evening such a special occasion. Congratulations to all volunteers for your ongoing dedication, commitment, and service to the community. The time, effort, and passion you give are greatly appreciated and make a real difference.

We are proud to be part of such a supportive emergency services community and grateful for the volunteers who are always ready to help when needed.

An early morning call out for brigades in Coondle yesterday, after a fire area reignited overnight.

On arrival, crews were met with a small amount of running fire and several trees alight, however the fire was quickly contained by responding firefighters.

Crews then carried out further mop-up and blacking out operations across the area.

This incident is a timely reminder that fires can remain active beneath the surface long after they appear out, particularly in current conditions. Continued monitoring of burnt areas is essential.

Last Sunday, crews responded to an escaped burn in Coondle that had spread on a slope, creating some challenging conditions for firefighters.

Crews worked quickly to contain the fire, with lay flats used to assist in suppression efforts and prevent further spread.

This incident is another reminder of how quickly burns can escape, particularly on sloping ground and in dry conditions. Please ensure burns are constantly monitored and fully extinguished before leaving the area.
