It was fantastic to see so many people showing an interest in protecting and caring for our heritage-listed Emerald Fringe. The recent community meeting focused on how the LNP election commitment of a $100,000 grant to Council could potentially be repurposed to best support the care, protection, and future management of this unique natural asset. It was wonderful to see so many thoughtful ideas and passionate discussions from the community.

We also noticed there was some uncertainty around the exact boundaries of the Emerald Fringe. This map was originally presented as part of the submission to the State Heritage Council for heritage listing, and following the successful acceptance of that submission, it became the official map defining the heritage boundaries.

Understanding these boundaries is an important part of protecting this very special area for future generations.

I'd like to give a big shout-out to Angela Hoskins of https://www.facebook.com/lifeoncoochiemudloisland, who does a fabulous job on the Heritage website. Please check out the beautiful video produced by Adric Spiteri at https://www.facebook.com/sureshotfilm, featuring long-time island resident David Paxton taking us on a Heritage walk in March. It's on the home page of https://cihs.org.au/ so you can't miss it. The website is full of interesting articles and free downloadable books and images about Coochie.

Despite the weather, a good crowd arrived at the Recreation Hall this morning for a very informative presentation by Moreton Bay Marine Park Ranger, Wayne Matthews.

Wayne covered a range of topics: turtles, whales, fishing, crab pots, migratory shorebirds, the app showing the designated zones in the Marine Park, and so much more.

Other presenters included representatives from Coochie Heritage, Coastcare and the volunteers who respond to turtle incidents on the island.

Redlands Coast Museum Show ‘n’ Tell – Stories from the Suitcase on 29 April is worth seeing. The exhibition is part of the National Trust's Australian Heritage Festival. Coochie Heritage is playing its part, thanks to Steve Shelley's role-playing as Matthew Flinders yesterday on Norfolk Beach, filmed and scripted by John and Russell from the Museum. Photos in the next post.
