Did you know that the Corangamite region is home to one of only 15 biodiversity hotspots in Australia?

We're talking about the ICONIC Victorian Volcanic Plains (VVP).

The VVP grasslands once covered 2.3 million hectares of southwest Victoria. Since European settlement the grasslands have been extensively cleared for agriculture and less than 1% remain!

The VVP supports more than 25 nationally threatened flora and fauna and a number of endangered and vulnerable vegetation communities. The grasslands are also of great significance for Traditional Owners.

Victorians are being urged to remain vigilant after the H5 strain of high pathogenicity avian influenza (H5 bird flu) was detected in a migratory seabird in Western Australia.

This is a significant development as it is the first time this strain of bird flu has been detected in Australia. It is a highly contagious strain that can cause serious disease in birds and other wild animals.

There are currently no detections in Victoria, but authorities are reminding us to stay aware and report anything unusual. The event in Western Australia is a timely reminder that the risk exists and vigilance is essential.

If you see something unusual, don’t ignore it. Avoid contact with sick or dead birds or wildlife. Sick birds should not be taken into care. Record details, including the number and type of birds/animals, the location, date and time.

Report clusters (5 or more) of sick or dead wild birds of any species, anywhere in Victoria. Report even one sick or dead:
• wild seabird, waterbird, shorebird or bird of prey (e.g. eagles, hawks)
• marine mammal (e.g. seal, sea lion, dolphin).

Please report it to Agriculture Victoria so it can be investigated via the website agriculture.vic.gov.au/birdflu or by calling the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

Looking for a role where you can make a real difference to waterways, estuaries and communities across south-west Victoria?

We're recruiting 2 x Project Officers – Estuaries and Environmental Water:
• 1 x 12‑month position
• 1 x 2‑year position

One role is full time and the other is 0.8 FTE - we can discuss preferences with successful candidates. 😀

Both roles will be responsible for a range of estuary and environmental water projects, programs and services, and will support partnerships between agencies, Traditional Owners and stakeholders.

Once covering 2.3 million hectares, the Victorian Volcanic Plain’s native grasslands have been extensively cleared for agriculture. Today, less than 1% remain.

The Karrkiyn Warbulloc project aims to protect and restore the critically endangered Natural Temperate Grasslands and Grassy Eucalypt Woodlands of the Victorian Volcanic Plain on Wadawurrung Country. It is funded by the Australian Government Natural Heritage Trust and delivered by the Corangamite CMA, a member of the Commonwealth Regional Delivery Partners Panel, in partnership with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation and Melbourne Water.

🌧️ Rain, cold and muddy boots didn’t stop this community! 🌱

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for 'What’s going on with our River?' Despite the wet and wintry conditions, the Upper Barwon River community showed up in force to learn, share ideas and support the health of our river.

Hosted in partnership with Barwon Water, Upper Barwon Landcare Network and the Gerangamete Forrest Landcare , Corangamite CMA thanks all our partners, speakers and attendees for making the day such a success.

🐞🌿 Learning from nature in Ballarat

Recently, students from St James Parish School, Siena Catholic Primary School and St Alipius Parish School came together for a ResourceSmart Schools Community of Practice workshop, exploring freshwater habitats and the fascinating world of waterbugs.

Through hands on habitat surveys, students discovered how waterbugs act as biological indicators, helping tell the story of waterway health. For some schools, it built on their River Detectives experience — for others, it was an exciting first step into citizen science.

The day highlighted the power of shared learning, collaboration and curiosity, showing students that they’re not just learners, but contributors to real world environmental monitoring.

Initiatives like this help inspire the next generation of environmental stewards, equipping them with the skills and confidence to care for local waterways.

👏 Thank you to the teachers, students and partners who made this possible.

Consultation on the draft Victorian Waterway Management Strategy is now open until 29 June.

This important strategy will guide how we:
🌿 Protect and sustain our waterways
🤝 Work with communities who live, work and play alongside them
🌏 Respond to challenges like climate change and population growth

Developed in partnership with Traditional Owners, communities, experts and waterway managers, the strategy reflects the shared responsibility we all have in caring for these places.
