One of our volunteers, Dot, recommends “The Last Voyage of Mrs Henry Parker”.

In Dot’s words: “This book is set aboard a ship, where Mrs Parker—experiencing the early stages of dementia—searches for her late husband, once the ship’s doctor. It thoughtfully explores the idea of “home” in two forms: the physical space of the ship and the emotional anchor of her husband—both places where her heart resides.”

One of our staff, Lou, recommends 'Foster' by Claire Keegan.

According to Lou, it is a quietly perfect novella. “A young girl, raised in poverty, neglect and deprivation, is fostered out to a childless couple, where she encounters a world of care and quiet affection previously unknown to her. With devastating subtlety, Keegan portrays the girl’s late awakening to what it means to belong and to feel safe, valued and loved.”

One of our staff, Jackie, recommends ‘At Home on the Farm’ by Ned Barraud.

“I grew up on a dairy farm in Capel, in the southwest of Western Australia, and it was an incredible way to spend a childhood. There were cows to tend, horses to ride, dogs everywhere, chooks in the yard, birds abundant, and the steady presence of old machinery perched in paddocks. Life could be tough at times, but it was deeply grounding and full of simple, honest moments. Even though this book is set in New Zealand, it brings all of that rushing back to me—the grit, the beauty, and the wholesomeness of farm life. It takes me straight back to a place that shaped me in so many ways. It was a special time in my life, and now, as I read this book to my daughter, I feel that same deep connection to a place I once called ‘home’.”
