Labor has failed a critical test on climate.
Grassroots groups across the continent are making sure the Albanese government is held accountable for approving another massive gas project. Join climate campaigners for these snap actions tomorrow including the DCAN one at 12pm, 159 High St Preston.

It’s bad news. Environment Minister Murray Watt has just “provisionally” approved Woodside’s massive extension of its dirty gas plant in WA.

Woodside’s North West Shelf is a key part of their massive Burrup Hub gas scheme.

It’s a truly crazy project to approve. It means the dirty gas plant can operate until 2070 – you read that right, 45 more years – threatening the incredible Murujuga rock art which is the oldest collection of rock art in the world while emitting dangerous amounts of climate pollution.

Darebin Council has been a climate action leader and has a bold Climate Emergency Plan (CEP) for the next four years.

But right now, there’s no funding to deliver it!

We need your voice to pressure Council to fund real climate action in the 2025–26 Budget. Here’s how:

✅ Make a short submission by 3 June: https://yoursay.darebin.vic.gov.au/ourdarebin
✅ Register to speak at the 16 June Hearing
✅ Email your councillor: Link to contact
✅ Volunteer with us – reply or DM to help!

💬 Tip: Just 1–2 sentences in your submission makes a difference. Be clear, be bold, be heard.

You might like to suggest that to better reflect the aims of the CEP, the budget could:

1️⃣ Explicitly prioritise and allocate greater resources to specific actions outlined in the CEP, such as programs to help upgrade homes and businesses (including for renters) and support for community groups and businesses to prepare for climate impacts.
2️⃣ Invest more significantly in measures to build community resilience to climate impacts and mitigate risks to Council and community assets, as suggested in the CEP as a crucial investment to avoid greater future costs.
3️⃣ Integrate a ‘climate lens’ more explicitly into budgeting decisions across all Council work, and use climate emergency principles to make informed financial decisions.

Let’s make Darebin a climate leader — not just in words, but in the budget. 💚

From the river to the sea!
An election is over, the work continues. Great to have a strong contingent of Darebin-Whittlsea Greens at today's Free Palestine rally. As said earlier this week:

'The Nakba has not ended.

It is lived every day when bombs rain down on schools and hospitals, when humanitarian aid is denied and when forced starvation and man-made famine become the latest tools of settler cruelty.

We are bearing witness to one of the greatest moral injustices of our time and yet governments all around the world, including our own, remain silent.

Brick by brick, the apartheid walls must fall. Israel's occupation must end.'

SNAP ACTION: Stand with the Pacific: No New Coal or Gas!

Monday 9 December 12noon, Coburg

Can you believe it? It has been confirmed that the Albanese Labor government is considering approving the expansion of three massive climate-wrecking coal mines just before Christmas.

The looming approvals come as Pacific Island nations are before the International Court of Justice arguing that developed countries such as Australia have a legal responsibility to tackle the climate crisis.

Will you stand with the Pacific and all those affected by intensifying climate impacts?

Join community members at Peter Khalil MP’s electorate office to call on Labor to show political leadership and reject these coal mines!

WHO: Climate Action Merri-bek, DCAN and other grassroots groups
WHEN: Monday 9 December, 12:00pm - 1.00pm
WHERE: Peter Khalil MP’s electorate office, 466-468 Sydney Road, Coburg, VIC, 3058

BACKGROUND:

This week, the Albanese government refused ‘reconsideration requests’ for three coal mines: Boggabri, Caval Ridge and Lake Vermont Meadowbrook.

The requests were made by the Environment Council of Central Queensland (ECoCeQ), represented by lawyers from Environmental Justice Australia. ECoCeQ asked the Albanese Labor government to reconsider the assessment of the coal mines, to assess their climate harm and how the climate pollution they would create could impact Australia’s environment and threatened species.

The Albanese Labor government refused.

This paves the way for the imminent approval of these three coal mines. And we won’t stand for it!

No one asks for coal for Christmas, but that is what the Albanese Labor government is prepared to give us. It’s time for the community to take action.

See you Monday!

Join us this Sunday 3-7pm at Cafe Gummo to celebrate Tara Burnett's candidacy for Cooper.

Our campaign launch party will be hosted by the State MP for our 86 line neighbours Richmond, Gabrielle de Vietri, and will feature former candidate for Cooper and legendary Black activist Celeste Liddle and Ohad Kozminsky from Teachers and School Staff for Palestine.

Together we can turn Cooper (and Darebin, Preston and Northcote) Green by 2030.

Another doorknock today from Nisbett St Reserve in Reservoir. Issues that residents have raised today included:

1- Trip hazards on walkways around the area.
2- Rubbish dumping and shopping trolley dumping on the streets
3- Tyler Street tram stop.
4- Required improvements to Reservoir Leasure Centre including a time slot for ladies only.
5- The role of Council in protecting the environment including support for the idea of a neighbourhood battery.
6- Dislike of Labor’s federal position on Gaza

Big thank you to the lovely volunteers for their time and the heartwarming conversations.

Over the weekend we knocked on hundreds of doors across Reservoir and Preston. Our two local government candidates for the areas we were in, Mohammad Helmy and Courtney May came along to talk to people directly and hear their concerns. They heard about local council issues, but also about Federal Labor's performance which has been lackluster in the eyes of many.

It's only through talking to people and having conversations that we'll be able to create real change.
