Yesterday afternoon, Cherrybrook 7, was responded with a strike team from Hornsby/Ku-ring-gai Rural Fire Service to assist our colleagues in the Central Coast with the bushfire at Calga.

Fortunately due to the incredible work on the ground and from the air, the fire was brought under control.

A hazard reduction (HR) burn is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, Friday 4 September.

The HR will be in the James Henty Oval bushland.

The smoke from this burn may settle over the Dural and Cherrybrook areas.

The burn will reduce accumulated bushfire fuel beside nearby homes and community facilities. These vital works are part of ongoing efforts to reduce local bushfire risk and improve community safety.

A national test of AusAlert is happening on Monday 27 July 2026 at around 2pm AEST. During the test, all compatible mobile devices in Australia will receive an alert at about the same time. ⚠️

The AusAlert national test will be a Critical Alert. This means you’ll receive it even if your device is on ‘silent’ or ‘do not disturb’. The alert may stay active for up to an hour.

AusAlert messages share important information, but they could make hidden safety devices easier to find.

If it’s not safe to receive the AusAlert national test on your devices:

⏰ Turn them off or put them in aeroplane mode at least one hour before the test.
📱 Keep them off or in aeroplane mode for 24 hours after the test.

Following the national test, if it’s not safe to receive AusAlerts on your hidden devices at any time, keep them turned off or in aeroplane mode until you need to use them.

If you’re concerned about your immediate safety, call 000.

If you have concerns for your safety and would like further advice or support, call 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732).

Thank you Westleigh Rural Fire Brigade for your hospitality and putting together a fantastic training exercise

Today, members from Westleigh and other Hornsby/Ku-ring-gai Rural Fire Service brigades participated in a multi-brigade Breathing Apparatus training exercise in Thornleigh, focused on building capability in internal fire fighting and search techniques, overhaul operations, and property protection activities.

These types of exercises are physically demanding and highly realistic, helping our firefighters maintain the skills needed to operate safely and effectively in challenging environments.

Training like this is critical to maintaining operational readiness and ensuring our volunteers can continue protecting the community safely and professionally.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in organising and supporting the exercise, including our awesome community, along with all participating crews who gave up their time to continue developing their skills 🚒 🔥

📍Location: Heckenberg Road, Ben Bullen Road, Colah Creek, Glenorie

This 50ha hazard reduction burn will be undertaken by NSW RFS

Please be aware that smoke will be visible in the area and surrounding suburbs during the operation. Please call 000 (triple zero) if you see fire which is unattended by emergency services.

This planned burn is an important part of reducing bushfire risk in our community.
