At a recent Special Meeting of the Murweh Shire Council, Council accepted a tender from Durack Civil for the construction of the Aurora Estate Stage 2 Development.

The Aurora Estate is a Council-delivered residential subdivision comprising 65 lots, developed to address the shortage of residential land in Charleville outside of the known flood impact area. The enabling infrastructure for stage 2 is proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s Residential Activation Fund.

This is another significant milestone for a project that will help address local housing needs and support the future growth and sustainability of Charleville.

South West Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils have stood shoulder to shoulder with their Western Queensland colleagues in unanimously rejecting the Federal Government’s proposed disaster recovery funding reforms.

Murweh Shire knows that effective disaster recovery is about more than repairing damage after the water goes down.

It is also about learning from each event and making communities and infrastructure better prepared for the next one.

Following the 2021–22 disaster season, DRFA Betterment funding supported improvements to Barngo Road. Disaster funding has also supported flood studies and warning initiatives for Charleville and Augathella, including work focused on the Warrego River and Bradley's Gully.

That combination of recovery, betterment and preparedness is critical for communities with a long history of flooding.

A national disaster funding system needs enough flexibility and funding to respond to the circumstances on the ground.

South West Queensland doesn't need less support for recovery. It needs funding that recognises the scale, distance and complexity of the job.
