Last year, nearly half the homes damaged or destroyed by fire in NSW did not have a working smoke alarm! 🚨 Be smart and take part in Smoke Alarm Action Day, and test your smoke alarm works! Lest we forget.

Before the sun rises, we remember.
Our ranks have long been shaped by military service. Firefighters who served in the World Wars, and in the conflicts and humanitarian crises since. The skills, the discipline, and the Anzac spirit carry across. Many never returned. Their names, and their sacrifice, are part of who we are. It is a connection that runs between our service and theirs, and one that continues to this day.

Lest we forget.

πŸ”₯ Yesterday the crews from Charlestown 255 responded to a bush fire in the Boolaroo/Cardiff area around 11am. As the fire escalated over the course of a few hours, FRNSW deployed multiple stations resulting in a fourth alarm response. This determines the number and type of response vehicles allocated to the fire, eg. 8 firetrucks, 1 duty commander, 1 superintendent, etc.

The crews worked extremely hard to extinguish the fire and protect surrounding residential and industrial property. CAFS was utilised to manage difficult areas to minimise the risk of reignition.

Stay safe everyone πŸš’

Last week, a crew of our on call firefighters travelled to the Emergency Services Academy (ESA) to learn about the Compressed Air Foam Systems (CAFS) on our specialized tanker.

This technology combines foam concentrate with compressed air to create a superior extinguishing foam, and it uses up to five times less water than conventional methods!

Additionally our crew had the opportunity to carry out a drafting exercise. Drafting is the process of using the tankers onboard pump to draw water from a static source (ponds, lakes, tanks, pools) via a hard suction hose when hydrants are unavailable. This is a critical skill in emergency situations where water infrastructure is limited or damaged.

Whilst travelling home, our crew received a timely call for the use of CAFS on a reignition of a house fire. This was the perfect opportunity for our on-call crew to put into practice what they'd learnt from their day at the ESA πŸš’
