- Draft On-Site Sewage Management Strategy 2026-2031

We have prepared the Draft On‑Site Sewage Management (OSSM) Strategy 2026-2031, which outlines how Council manages and regulates on‑site wastewater systems across the Local Government Area. 💧

These systems, such as septic tanks and aerated treatment systems are used on properties that are not connected to town sewer and play an important role in protecting public health, waterways, groundwater and the environment.

Your feedback will help Council understand community needs and identify opportunities to improve how the OSSM program is delivered. ℹ️

To keep the community informed about roads and other maintenance and repairs in the Cessnock Local Government Area, Council will be providing you with regular updates on where our crews are working and what they are working on.

🌳 Help Shape the Future of Apex Park, Cessnock!

We're planning exciting improvements to Apex Park, creating a safer, more accessible and welcoming space for the community to enjoy.

This project is fully funded by the Australian Government's Regional Precincts and Partnerships Program. The current concept design includes:

✅ Accessible walkways
✅ A new footbridge and plaza area
✅ Resurfaced car parking
✅ Improved lighting
✅ New landscaping and naturalisation of the Hunter Water channel
✅ Park furniture and seating
✅ Public art opportunities

Our Community Engagement Team will be out and about seeking feedback on the concept design at the following locations:

⚽ Community, Sporting & Environment Grants 🍃
- Submissions now OPEN

👀 Are you a local community group, sporting team, or environmental organisation? This one is for you!

Each financial year Council makes funding available under its Community, Sporting and Environment Grant to support community, cultural, sporting and environmental projects that improve and enhance community life, in our local government area. 📈

There are four different streams of the Grant, each with different funding amounts available:

🏈 Sporting Facilities - $30,000
👥 Community Facilities - $30,000
🏘️ Community and Cultural Development - $25,000
🌱 Sustainable Communities - $11,000.

ℹ️ These grants can be utilised to complete minor capital works, purchase equipment, refurbish facilities, and improve community wellbeing. Applicants are encouraged to check the grant guidelines for more information on eligibility and what can be funded.

🌳 SCULPTURE IN THE VINEYARDS - BEGINS TOMORROW 🪾

The Wollombi Sculpture in the Vineyards 2026 will run from 12-27 September, inviting local residents and visitors to explore contemporary sculptures set among the Wollombi Valley's historic and scenic vineyards. Fun fact: the sculpture trail map includes enjoy over 180 works by 140 artists 😮

📅 Come along to the Opening Night tomorrow Saturday 12 September from 4:30-6pm at the Wollombi Tennis Club - everyone is welcome!

🗑️ Cessnock Waste Management Centre ♻️
- Landfill Cell Extension - Stage 1 Complete

Established in 1970. the Cessnock Waste Management Centre has served the community for over 50 years now, ensuring responsible waste management occurs.

🏗️ As the existing landfill cell was approaching capacity, a new cell was planned for construction. This new cell has been developed in an area previously subject to mining and quarrying activities.

This project, the first of four stages as part of the landfill extension, was recently completed, and will benefit from the following:

✅ Ensures waste collection & landfilling continues to be undertaken by Council
✅ Secures local employment
✅ Transforms a degraded former mine site into a productive resource
✅ Will ultimately provide a further 20 years of landfill capacity

Importantly, the project will lead to better environmental outcomes at the site, through establishment of the biodiversity offset area, formal management and treatment of surface water through the site, and construction of landfill systems with robust lining systems to prevent contamination with the environment. 🍃

We've launched the Becoming Resilient and Ready Together Project, with the goal of developing a Cessnock Community Resilience Plan. This Plan aims to:

⚠️ Improve community preparedness for challenges, shocks and stresses, including emergencies and natural hazards

🛡️ Help build safer, stronger and more resilient communities

Our next instalment of the parking enforcement series is all about our school zones. 🏫

School zones were created to help protect children on their way to and from schools at the times and places where they are often in high numbers. 🛡️

Why are these parking rules so important to follow? 🤔

🚧 PROJECT UPDATE 🚧
- Doyle and Tennant Street Bellbird - Walking Path

Our team has been hard at work, constructing a new walking path on Doyle St and Tennant St. 🚶‍♂️

This project, funded by the Transport for NSW Get Kids Active Program, is nearing completion, with line marking of the raised wombat crossing occurring today. Concrete pouring continues to progress, with the final sections of the pathway under construction. 🛠️

This is an incredibly exciting project to watch unfold, with pedestrians, cyclists and drivers all benefiting with improved safety and access in the area. School kids and parents especially will take advantage of this upgrade, with the project extending existing footpath networks by completing a link from Bellbird Public School along Doyle St and Tennant St down to Balangara Way, allowing primary school children to walk/cycle to and from school. 🚸

We look forward to seeing the finished product, and will keep the community informed when this project is complete. 😍
