"It's only fair that it is the big polluters who foot this bill," Cr Maddock said at the meeting.

"Without decisive action to ensure they do, it will be local communities and councils like ours who continue to pay for the climate damage out of our own pockets."

Last week, our community celebrated a ‘make big polluters pay' motion passed unanimously by Mount Alexander Shire Council. As a result, Council has noted the high cost of climate change on our residents and businesses and committed to advocate for a fairer way to pay for its impacts.

We are a community that understands the impacts of climate change. It’s not just the January 2026 fires — it’s also the 2025 drought, the 2024 hailstorm, and the 2022 flood.

The movement to make big polluters pay is growing rapidly. Our communities can’t afford to wait any longer — big polluters must pay their share now.

We also need other levels of Government on board. If our Labor Government fails to make fossil fuel companies pay their fair share, they will be ripping off every household and business in our community.

During the Black Summer fires there was a major campaign from the Murdoch press which tried to convince people that the bad season had nothing to do with climate change and was all about arson.

This summer they have been surprisingly quiet and it feels like things have shifted - more and more people understand that fire seasons are getting longer and more intense and human induced climate change is driving the changes.

So - do we make the fossil fuel companies pay for the damage they are contributing to?

We wanted to test the idea through this survey.
