The Cassilis Recreation Reserve has a long history being located adjacent to the Cassilis Cemetery during the gold rush era and used for many years as a gathering place for the local community.
In 1994 a Committee of Management was established to help manage and restore the Reserve and create a focal point for the community once again. The Committee also wanted to establish a small aboretum, displaying as many as possible of the species suitable to the climatic conditions and soil type in the valley. The area had been significantly degraded with the effects of gold mining and grazing and restoring indigenous and planting ornamental trees and shrubs was seen as a way to repair some of this damage.
The Committee still exists today and the site has been well maintained with improvements made with installing two composting public toilets with disabled access, a BBQ shelter, BBQ sites, picnic tables, seating and extensive tree planting.
As the nearby cemetery is no longer available for burials, the Arboretum has become a memorial to many as family and friends have planted individual trees in memory of loved ones.
