Great to see more Canberrans getting behind electric vehicles ๐Ÿš—โšก

The ACT continues to lead the nation in switching to the superior technology and the latest data shows just how fast things are moving.

In April 2026, zeroโ€‘emissions vehicles (including EVs) reached a record 34% of new vehicle registrations in the ACT.

Thatโ€™s a remarkable jump from the already strong baseline of around 25%+ over the past year.

When you look more broadly at plugโ€‘in vehicles (EVs + PHEVs), the shift is even clearer. Nationally in April, EVs made up 16.4% of sales and PHEVs a further 10.2%, meaning more than a quarter of all new cars were plugโ€‘in.

In leading markets like the ACT, where both EV and PHEV uptake is significantly higher than the national average, that combined share is clearly pushing well beyond oneโ€‘third and in peak months is tracking toward levels approaching 40%+ of new sales.

There are also signs the broader market is heading toward a tipping point: almost 46% of all new vehicles sold nationally in April were electrified in some form (EVs, PHEVs or hybrids).

Thereโ€™s a clear reason for this momentum. Electric vehicles are simply a superior technology. They are far more efficient, using much more of their energy to move the car rather than wasting it as heat. They are cheaper to run, with lower energy and maintenance costs driven by simpler mechanical systems.

PHEVs are also playing an important transitional role, helping more drivers step into electrification, but the direction of travel is clear: fully electric vehicles deliver the biggest longโ€‘term benefits for households and the environment.

For Canberra, powered by 100% renewable electricity, the upside is even greater: cleaner air, less traffic noise and lower transport costs.

The transition is accelerating fast, and the ACT is showing what the future looks like.

๐ŸŒธFloriade is back for 2026 and itโ€™s a Feast of Flowers๐ŸŒธ

This spring, will come alive with one million blooms as Floriade returns to Commonwealth Park from 12 September to 11 October.

โœจ Bigger. Brighter. More immersive than ever.

In 2026, Floriade becomes a true Feast of Flowers, blending stunning garden displays with food, creativity and family-friendly experiences across the city.

๐ŸŒผ One city in bloom
๐Ÿฝ๏ธ A feast for the senses
๐ŸŽ‰ A celebration of community

And itโ€™s not just in the park.

Last year alone:
โœ… 519,000+ visitors
โœ… $71 million for our economy

Thatโ€™s why Floriade remains one of Australiaโ€™s premier events and a powerful boost for local jobs and tourism.

๐Ÿ“ Save the dates:
๐ŸŒธ Floriade: 12 Sept โ€“ 11 Oct
๐ŸŒ™ NightFest: 1 โ€“ 4 Oct

Winter is here! The next few days are going to be miserable! I'm not even going to talk about the real temps because it's the apparent temperatures (how it feels with the wind chill) that will help guide your week. Tuesday will be rainy, windy, wet and cold and feel like 4ยฐC. Wednesday about the same with less rain. On Thursday it'll be lucky if the apparent temp cracks 2ยฐC! It calms down by Friday with sunny days into the weekend, and fog in the mornings. But the apparent temps will struggle to bust 10ยฐC.

The new Early Childhood to Year 6 school opening to students next year, will be named in honour of former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam.

It recognises Gough Whitlamโ€™s enduring legacy of leadership, reform, and commitment to education and opportunity for all Australians. His vision continues to inspire future generations, making it a fitting foundation for a school dedicated to nurturing young minds.

Whitlam School will cater for up to 780 students from preschool to year 6 when fully complete.

The first stage of the new school will open for Term 1 in 2027.

๐Ÿ€ Delivering more courts, more access, and more opportunity for Canberraโ€™s basketball community

Weโ€™re delivering on our election commitment to expand the Belconnen Basketball Centre, a major upgrade that will significantly boost capacity for training and competition.

The redevelopment will increase indoor courts from 4 to 7, including a convertible show court with retractable seating for up to 1,800 spectators. This centrepiece will enable Canberra to host higher-level competitions and showcase local talent on a bigger stage.

Key features of the upgrade include:
โœ… Additional change rooms and amenities for players, officials, and spectators
โœ… Increased car parking
โœ… Installation of solar panels and battery storage
โœ… Modern, flexible spaces to support a growing basketball community

Basketball is one of Canberraโ€™s fastest-growing sports, with more than 14,000 registered participants across the ACT. Demand has surged, making it harder for teams to secure court time, this investment directly addresses that challenge.

The right infrastructure helps develop the next generation of local talent, inspired by greats like Patty Mills and Lauren Jackson, while also creating more opportunities for Canberrans to stay active and connected.

Planning work will continue in the second half of this year, with construction timelines to be confirmed as the project progresses.
