Ambassador Flood was delighted to host Assistant Minister Senator Nita Green - Senator for Queensland at the residence to discuss how Ireland and Australia can work together on sporting events, particularly ahead of Ireland’s match against the Wallabies in Sydney in July.

In addition to sports diplomacy, Senator Green also discussed her recent visit to Nauru ahead of the Ambassador-designate’s presentation of credentials this week. The Government of the Republic of Nauru

Ireland is an active member of the Governing Council of the International Seabed Authority (ISA). As an island nation, Ireland’s focus is on supporting a precautionary approach to commercial deep-sea mining. We advocate for robust marine ecosystem protections, international law, and science-based decision-making.

While in Suva, it was a particular pleasure for Ambassador Flood to meet the Secretary-General of the ISA, Leticia Reis de Carvalho, who was visiting the Pacific region for the first time since assuming her leadership role.

Sporting connections are an important dimension of Ireland’s relationship with Australia. With over 100,000 Irish born residents in Australia, the Irish community here has always used sport as a bridge between two cultures and a connection to home. Ireland’s first International Sports Diplomacy Strategy acknowledges sport as a vehicle for soft power, people-to-people connection, connecting with our diaspora and the promotion of Irish values internationally.

From Cora Staunton and Vikki Wall in Aussie Rules to cricketers Isobel Joyce and Kim Garth, the sporting connections between Ireland, Australia, and our respective diasporas is remarkably rich.

Meet some of the strong Irish female athletes in the Australian sporting industry.

2026 marks the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Ireland and Australia, the opening of a new Consulate in Melbourne, and Ireland’s first woman Ambassador to Australia.

Last week we had Secretary General, Joe Hackett and other senior officials from the Department visiting Australia for bilateral consultations between our two countries. These talks are ever more vital in today’s climate.

Ireland’s historical links with Australia are strong and positive. This is underpinned by extraordinary people-to-people links.

You only have to look around Australia to see the impact of Irish people across so many areas offering solutions to some of the greatest challenges of our time. The Irish diaspora are doing great work across the country, and they carry with them the resilience and creativity that are a key part of our Irish identity.

Now, with our Embassy in Canberra, our two Consulates in Sydney and Melbourne, and our Honorary Consul in Perth, we will be better able to serve Irish people living across this beautiful country.
