🪴Bonsai behind the scenes with Sandra, our last but not least featured volunteer this week.

🟢 Which areas do you volunteer in at the Arboretum?

National Bonsai & Penjing Collection of Australia, tree measuring, frog watch and special events.

🟢 What inspired you to start volunteering with us?

Volunteering was always part of my retirement plan, so I started in a small way, prior to finishing work.

🟢 What skills or experiences have you gained that you didn’t expect?

At first the amount of knowledge of the trees, their history and how to care for them, seems insurmountable. But in reality, I learn new things every day and my knowledge base continues to grow over time.

🟢 What’s your favourite part of volunteering at the Arboretum?

Seeing the excitement on the faces of visitors when they walk into the Bonsai Collection for the first time.

🟢 If you could describe volunteering here in three words, what would they be?

Friendships, nature, contribution.

🟢 What’s a memorable moment you’ve had while volunteering here?

I was on duty in the Bonsai Collection when some light snow started to fall - a gorgeous sight in a gorgeous location!❄️

A greater knowledge of the Arboretum's trees and forests onsite.

Sharing with people the the origins of how the Arboretum came to be and my passion for it's future.

🟢 If you could describe volunteering at the Arboretum in three words, what would they be? gregarious, uplifting, fun.

I recently discovered a Paraná Pine tree with so many pine cones, they were huge!!! I took a photo and showed it to everyone at the 'Feel The Forests' display during Canberra Tree Week.
