A restaurant above 3,000 metres? Welcome to Mount Titlis, in Engelberg 🇨🇭

The new Titlis Tower transforms a former antenna tower into a visitor space with a restaurant, retail area and panoramic viewing platform overlooking the Swiss Alps.

At this altitude, every detail matters. Wind, ice, access, materials and logistics all influence how infrastructure can operate in high mountain environments.

More than a spectacular viewpoint, the project illustrates how Switzerland combines alpine tourism, architecture and engineering in extreme conditions.

🚡 From mountains to cities around the world, cable cars are reaching new horizons thanks to the expertise of Swiss companies. 🇨🇭

In Switzerland, cable cars are mainly used in ski resorts and hiking areas. In South America, by contrast, gondola lifts are an integral part of public transportation in large cities, and many of these systems rely on Swiss expertise.

In Mexico City, three lines are already in service, with two more planned soon. Following this expansion, the metropolitan network will exceed 60 kilometers in length. 📏

One of the new routes, approximately 15 kilometers long, will become the world’s longest urban cable car line. For this project, more than 460 cabins will be supplied by CWA, the Swiss subsidiary of the Doppelmayr Group, based in Olten.

The company has also delivered a fully operational ten-line network in La Paz. For this project, 1,500 cabins were supplied for use in Bolivia by CWA, while the Swiss SME Brugg Cables was responsible for the cables.

According to CWA, gondola lifts enable the rapid deployment of new mobility solutions in metropolitan areas with saturated transport systems.

The company has been delivering its cabins worldwide for decades, notably to Vietnam, New Zealand, and Turkey. With a workforce of 150 employees, it produces around 2,000 cabins each year. 🛠️

The cabins are equipped with foldable seats for wheelchairs and strollers, as well as a stop display system. According to a German study, cable cars are among the greenest urban mobility solutions.

Transparency. Made practical. 🇨🇭

In 1900, Swiss chemist Jacques Edwin Brandenberger attempted to create a stain-resistant fabric after observing wine spilled on a tablecloth. While the experiment did not succeed as intended, it led to an unexpected result: a thin, transparent film that could be separated from the surface.

A few years later, in 1908, he developed the first industrial process to produce this material, later named cellophane.

What began as an accident became a major innovation in packaging, transforming how products are protected, preserved and presented worldwide.

As part of their visit to Melbourne, Swiss Ambassador Nikolas Stürchler and Consul General Elisabeth Bösch Malinen had the pleasure of visiting Nestlé and Clariant, two Swiss companies with a strong presence in Victoria.

At Nestlé, they were warmly received by Andrew Lawrey and Sally Strautins before touring the Melbourne factory and gaining insight into the production of KitKat. It was impressive to see the precision, expertise, and many production steps involved in bringing this delicious snack to consumers. The tour illustrated how Swiss expertise, quality standards, and long-term investment contribute to Australia’s food manufacturing sector and local value creation.

At Clariant, Olga Latsis and Pedro de Lima GAICD welcomed them for an exchange on the company’s activities in Australia, including its work in areas linked to critical minerals and rare earths. The visit offered valuable insights into how Swiss innovation and specialised expertise contribute to sectors of strategic importance for Victoria and Australia more broadly.

These company visits highlighted the breadth of Swiss business activity in Victoria and the important role Swiss companies play in supporting innovation, investment, and economic ties between Switzerland and Australia. A warm thank you to Nestlé and Clariant for hosting the delegation. 🇨🇭🇦🇺

The Embassy of Switzerland in Australia, in partnership with Lexbridge Lawyers, hosted a seminar bringing together diplomats and international lawyers to explore “The Pacific engagement with the multilateral system: navigating current challenges.”

The discussion covered key issues shaping Pacific participation in international forums, including international trade, asset confiscation, and efforts to combat money laundering. Participants reflected on the enduring importance of multilateralism, while acknowledging the increasing pressures and complexities facing the system today.

We extend our sincere thanks to Dr Sarah McCosker, Richard Braddock, and Damien van der Toorn for sharing their expertise and helping foster a thoughtful and dynamic exchange.

Thank you as well to all participants for their valuable insights, contributions, and questions. We look forward to continuing this important conversation.

In Geneva, two rivers meet… but don’t mix 🌊🇨🇭

At La Jonction, the Rhône and the Arve flow side by side, creating one of Switzerland’s most striking natural contrasts.

The Rhône originates from the Rhône Glacier in the canton of Valais, Switzerland, before passing through Lake Geneva, which naturally filters its sediments and gives the river its clearer appearance.

The Arve, more turbulent and rich in sediment, comes from the Mont-Blanc massif in Haute-Savoie, France.
Because of their different sediment levels, speeds and temperatures, the two rivers remain visibly separated before gradually merging downstream.

After the confluence, the Rhône continues its journey through France and eventually flows into the Mediterranean Sea.

The next astronauts exploring the Moon could be driving on Swiss-developed technology. 🌕

NASA has selected the company Astrolab as one of the providers of a new crewed lunar rover for the Artemis campaign.

The vehicle, called CLV-1, will rely on critical technologies developed by Venturi Space teams in Switzerland, Monaco and France.

Among the technologies are hyper-deformable wheels designed for extreme lunar terrain, high-performance batteries, and advanced battery management systems.

The rover is built for one of the harshest environments ever explored:
→ temperatures from -240°C to +130°C
→ steep lunar terrain
→ lunar nights lasting up to 14 Earth days

NASA plans for the new lunar vehicles developed under this programme to reach the Moon by 2028. 🌑🚀

🧀 Gruyère, Emmental, Tilsiter... Why are Swiss cheeses famous around the world? 🇨🇭

Some Swiss cheeses are famous far beyond Switzerland’s borders. But this reputation did not appear overnight...

Although the exact origins of cheese remain unknown, the Middle Ages saw the rise of cow’s milk in cheesemaking and the appearance of hard cheeses.

In rural Swiss communities, turning milk into butter and cheese was long a practical way to preserve it. During the summer months, milk from cows grazing on alpine pastures was transformed into dairy products that could last through the winter.

The spread of Swiss products and know-how beyond the country’s borders can be explained by three main factors:
🛣️ the opening of the Gotthard route in the 13th century;
🌎 the migration of young Swiss people;
⛪ the easing of Church rules in the 15th century, as it became more tolerant of cheese consumption and, consequently, its export.

From the 19th century onwards, many Swiss cheesemakers settled in France, the United States, Canada and Eastern Europe, where they helped develop local cheesemaking. In France, they established themselves in mountainous regions. In North America, they contributed to the rise of large-scale dairies. They played a major role in spreading the reputation of Gruyère, Emmental and Tilsiter.

Swiss cheeses continue to be enjoyed both in Switzerland and around the world, and Swiss cheesemakers regularly stand out in international competitions.

This recognised expertise is rooted in high-quality training. Every year, around a hundred new cheesemakers complete their training in Switzerland, helping to carry on the tradition.
