The Nordic Embassies in Canberra are pleased to announce we are hosting a collaborative climate-focused event the 14 September 🇩🇰🇫🇮🇳🇴🇸🇪

The event will explore Nordic climate innovation and Australian perspectives ahead of COP31, with speakers sharing insights on innovative climate solutions and the role of international collaboration in building a more sustainable future 🌱

The program will also feature a panel discussion highlighting Nordic expertise in:
♻️ Renewable energy
⛽ Sustainable fuels
🚌 Clean transport
🌏 Carbon capture and storage
🏭 Industry decarbonisation

Ambassador Arto Haapea had the honour to join Ukraine’s 35th Independence Day celebration at the Australian Parliament House alongside Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles MP, Senator Deborah O’Neill, Senator James Paterson, Assistant Minister Peter Khalil, Ambassador Vasyl Myroshnychenko, members of the Ukrainian community, and many other friends of Ukraine.

In his remarks, Ambassador Haapea highlighted Finland’s unwavering support for Ukraine and recalled President Alexander Stubb’s recent message saying “Finland understands Ukraine’s fight for freedom” through Finland’s own history. Independence, democracy and freedom should never be taken for granted.

He also thanked Australia for its strong and consistent support for Ukraine and paid special tribute to Ambassador Myroshnychenko for his tireless efforts in strengthening support for Ukraine across Australia and beyond. Recalling their participation in the Canberra Half Marathon earlier this year as part of “Team Ukraine”, Ambassador Haapea underscored how practical initiatives, such as the Warmth for Ukraine campaign, are helping bring resilience and hope to communities affected by the war.

The photograph exhibition at Parliament House served as a powerful reminder of Ukraine’s courage, its ongoing struggle for freedom, and the international partnerships helping to build a stronger future. Ambassador Haapea emphasised that supporting Ukraine is not only about helping it endure today, but also about investing in tomorrow.

As Ukraine continues its journey towards a just and lasting peace, one message remains clear:
“Ukraine is not running this race alone. We are all in Team Ukraine.”

Upon returning to Canberra from the Annual Meeting of Heads of Mission held in Finland, Ambassador Arto Haapea's first call of duty was signing of books of condolence at the Embassies of two important countries for Finland:

Introducing new colleague, Pihla Rusanen! 🇫🇮✨

💡Can you tell us about yourself?
Hi! I’m Pihla, and I’ve just started as an intern at the Embassy of Finland in Canberra. I’m currently studying Industrial Engineering and Management at Aalto University, after completing my Bachelor’s degree in Information Networks.

🦘 What was your first impression of Australia?
My first impression of Australia has been great – and Canberra has definitely surprised me in the best way! I didn’t expect a capital city to be quite this green. I’m already looking forward to exploring the city and going on lots of hikes during my time here. I’m also happy to report that I haven’t seen a single spider yet, and I’m hoping to keep it that way!

🌏 What are you looking forward to over your time here?
With my engineering background, I’m particularly interested in learning more about the role of technology and innovation in international cooperation. I’m also looking forward to getting to know the Embassy’s work, meeting new people and exploring more of Australia. I’ve already had such a warm welcome, and I’m excited for everything the coming months will bring!

Over the past two weeks, Ambassador Arto Haapea has been in Finland for a programme of industry visits, stakeholder engagement, and the annual Ambassador’s Conference.

Travelling across the country together with Finnish colleagues and Heads of Mission from Tokyo, Seoul and Taipei, the Ambassador has met with leading Finnish companies and organisations to discuss opportunities and trends across the Asia-Pacific region. Highlights included visits to Nokia’s new R&D and manufacturing campus in Oulu, CSC and the LUMI supercomputer in Kajaani, Terrafame’s operations in Sotkamo, and roundtable discussions hosted by the Confederation of Finnish Industries (EK) and BusinessOulu.

The programme concluded in Helsinki with Finland’s annual Ambassadors’ Conference, bringing together representatives from Finland’s global diplomatic network, political leaders, business representatives and experts to discuss foreign and security policy, economic resilience, AI and the changing international environment. In these moments of geopolitical change, these exchanges help ensure Finland’s diplomatic network remains connected, informed and ready to continue advancing Finnish interests around the world. 🇫🇮🇦🇺
